Did ‘The Simpsons’ Actually Kill Off Marge Simpson? Us Explains

The Simpsons stunned fans by killing off Marge Simpson in its season 36 finale … sort of.

In the episode titled “Estranger Things,” airing on May 18, there were hints at surprising events in store for Marge and Homer once their children reach adulthood. The season finale, scripted by long-term writer Tim Long from The Simpsons, fast-forwards 35 years to show that Marge passes away before Homer. However, fans of the show can relax as a representative for the series told Us Weekly that “Marge is not deceased.

In the final episode of season 36, Marge grew concerned that Bart and Lisa’s constant squabbles might lead them to become estranged siblings who lose touch with each other after her absence.

In the series “Stranger Things,” we leap forward three decades, revealing that Marge’s ominous prophecy held true: Bart and Lisa struggle to keep in touch after Marge passes away in her seventies. During this time jump sequence, Sarah McLachlan lends a poignant touch with her appearance and a melancholic ballad about the brothers drifting apart.

In the future, Lisa takes on the role of president for the now-rebranded Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), with the less popular men’s league renamed as the Men’s National Basketball Association (MNBA). At the same time, Bart is jobless and appears to be residing alone in the dilapidated Simpson family home.

During her visit to Springfield, Lisa uncovers that Bart has been using the money she’s been sending for Homer’s retirement fund, instead allowing their aging father and his friends to live in their rundown house. Enraged by this revelation, Lisa scolds Bart, labeling him as “a disappointment as a brother, son, a human being, and given your irresponsible behavior, likely an unsuitable parent”. She then informs Senior Services about the situation.

In the scenario when enforcement agents show up to relocate Homer to a retirement home in Florida, it falls on Bart and Lisa to join forces in an attempt to save their dad. As Lisa grapples with devising a rescue strategy, she eventually unearths a DVD marked “Marge Simpson’s Emotional Will.

In an extremely rare event if I pass away before you, remember that I’ll forever remain with you, present in the crackle of your frying bacon, froth of your beer, and in all the other shared moments that may just bring us back together again. This is my message to you in my video will.

Audience discovers that Maggie, the youngest child of Homer and Marge, has taken up the role of a farm equipment auctioneer. Prior to this, Marge offers words of inspiration to her eldest offspring.

Marge gently reminds Bart and Lisa, ‘Remember, long ago, I advised you two to support one another and not grow distant.’ My deepest wish is that you’re watching over each other and embarking on a lifelong adventure as partners,” says Marge.

Lisa and Bart devise a strategy to halt the bus transporting Homer and other senior citizens to Florida so they can bring their father home to Springfield. In a poignant conclusion to the episode, Marge is seen perched on a cloud in heaven, keeping an eye on her loved ones.

“I’m just so happy my kids are close again,” Marge beams.

Later on, Marge is interrupted by Ringo Starr extending an invitation for her to share an endless shrimp feast at the banquet in heaven with him. After a warm embrace, she expresses her joy about their ability to marry different individuals in heaven, marking the end of the season finale.

A lot of viewers were taken aback when it appeared that one of the most adored characters in the entirety of The Simpsons‘ animated run had been written off.

“No way there tryna kill off Marge in the Simpsons wtf,” one viewer complained via X.

Another stunned Simpsons fan wrote, “WHAT THE F*** DO YOU MEAN MARGE IS DEAD???!!!”

A viewer mentioned that it’s been over a decade since they last watched an episode of ‘The Simpsons’, yet they can’t believe Marge was killed off!

Despite some unexpected revelations about Marge’s fate in “Stranger Things”, it is confirmed, as seen in “Us”, that The Simpsons has not yet written off the beloved character voiced by Julie Kavner since 1987.

“Marge is not dead. Click-bait is alive & well,” a Fox spokesperson told Us.

In April, Fox extended the run of “The Simpsons” for four additional seasons, ensuring its longevity up until its 40th anniversary season at least. Notably, “The Simpsons” surpassed “Gunsmoke” in 2009 to claim the title of the longest-running prime-time television series ever produced.

As “The Simpsons” comes back this autumn, indications suggest that the series will continue on from where it left off, with Homer and Marge continuing their ongoing role of parenting Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

All 36 seasons of The Simpsons can be streamed on Disney+.
