Looking back at Kevin Costner’s last episode of Yellowstone now, three years after it originally aired, feels even more poignant. Costner left the show during the fifth season, which was split into two parts. He played John Dutton III in just the first eight episodes of Yellowstone season 5, with his final appearance being on January 1, 2023.
After Kevin Costner left the show, Taylor Sheridan reworked the last six episodes of Yellowstone. He wrote John Dutton off the series and focused the rest of season 5 on how Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) dealt with their father’s death. Ultimately, the siblings decided to sell the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to the Broken Rock reservation.
Kevin Costner’s absence was noticeable in the second half of Yellowstone season 5. However, looking back at his last episode, it’s clear John Dutton said a lot of heartfelt goodbyes to those closest to him, almost as if foreshadowing his departure.
Kevin Costner’s Last Yellowstone Episode Already Felt Like A Goodbye To John Dutton
The last scenes featuring Kevin Costner as John Dutton at the Yellowstone Ranch in season 5, episode 8, “A Knife and No Coin,” feel even more poignant now. Governor Dutton had accepted he would be living in Helena, Montana’s capital city. He asked Monica (Kelsey Asbille) to assist Kayce in managing the ranch, offering them a new home at East Camp as compensation.
John said goodbye to Rip Wheeler, who would be spending the next year looking after the Dutton cattle in Texas. He then shared a heartfelt farewell with Kayce, telling him, “You’re stronger than I was. I guess that’s how it’s supposed to be.” Kayce was stunned when John, rarely one for displays of affection, hugged him and said, “I love you, son,” before heading to Helena. Both Kayce and the audience were left speechless by this rare moment.
Knowing that these were John Dutton’s final moments at the Yellowstone ranch makes the already emotional conversation between Kayce and Rip even more poignant and foreshadowing.
Kayce: “You’d think he was the one leaving.”
Rip: “He is.”
Throughout the first part of Yellowstone season 5, John Dutton was stepping back from running the ranch – the land he dedicated his life to – because he’d become Governor. He didn’t want the job and made no secret of it, but he took it to protect his family’s future.
I just finished watching episode 8 of Yellowstone season 5, and honestly, the scenes between Rip and Kayce really got to me. Knowing this was likely the last time John would see them, and the rest of his family – Kayce, Monica, even Summer and Carter – was heartbreaking. It was especially poignant seeing him head to Broken Rock to stand with Thomas Rainwater, only to find out Jamie was plotting to impeach him as Governor. It felt like everything was crashing down, and it was a really tough watch.
Kevin Costner’s last scene as John Dutton in Yellowstone shows Beth confronting him after finding out about the Train Station from Jamie. At the time, it seemed like Costner would continue with the show, making those scenes at the Dutton Ranch a poignant goodbye. Knowing now that he wouldn’t return, watching those moments is incredibly emotional.
Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Had One Big Silver Lining
However fans felt about how Taylor Sheridan wrote off John Dutton after Kevin Costner left Yellowstone, he skillfully focused on the remaining main characters – Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Rip (Cole Hauser) – to continue the story of his popular modern Western.
Despite the challenge of continuing Yellowstone without Kevin Costner’s character, the three lead actors – Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and Cole Hauser – delivered powerful performances. They not only successfully carried the show to its conclusion but also established their characters as the foundation for the upcoming spinoffs: Kayce’s story will continue in Marshals, while Beth and Rip will be featured in The Dutton Ranch.
Looking back, the way Taylor Sheridan changed who ordered John Dutton’s murder feels like a rewrite of the story. Originally, in season 5, episode 8 of Yellowstone, it seemed Jamie planned the hit with Sarah Atwood after Beth confronted him. However, Sheridan altered the plot to show Sarah hiring the assassins without Jamie knowing.
Kevin Costner’s departure and the exit of his character, John Dutton, significantly impacted the show’s ending, and it proved impossible to create a satisfying conclusion without him. Despite this, Taylor Sheridan and the remaining cast did their best to finish Yellowstone. Now, looking back, Costner’s last episode feels even more poignant, as John Dutton’s abrupt and unexpected departure is particularly sad.
