Be warned: this article contains significant spoilers for the first episode of The Boys season 5. A major character has been killed off as the show’s final season begins.
Jessie T. Usher, who plays A-Train in The Boys, recently spoke with ScreenRant about the season 5 premiere and his character’s shocking death at the hands of Homelander. Usher, a series original cast member, described filming the scene as “incredible,” praising Antony Starr (who plays Homelander) as a fantastic scene partner. He explained that they were able to fully explore the complex relationship between their characters, creating a powerful and authentic moment. Usher said he couldn’t have imagined a better way for his character to exit the show.
Usher was particularly struck by the scene where A-Train swerved, calling it a full-circle moment. He said he actually “applauded” when he read it, noting that it’s rare for a character’s ending to be so poetic. He was glad A-Train made a clear decision in that moment, and that the filming allowed them to show his internal process – even though it happened quickly, they slowed it down to capture his reaction on his face.
Usher explained that the character is faced with a choice: continue down a destructive path or change his behavior, even if it means sacrificing everything. He decides to break the cycle and avoid repeating past mistakes, realizing the whole situation has been pointless. This leads him to regret losing the girl and ultimately confront Homelander, accepting whatever consequences may come.
After the dramatic events of The Boys season 5, the story is far from over for our heroes as they prepare for their ultimate showdown with Homelander. Creator Eric Kripke and the cast have repeatedly warned fans that anyone could die in the final season – no one is guaranteed to survive.
Upcoming episodes of The Boys season 5 will feature a reunion of the Supernatural cast – Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Jared Padalecki – organized by the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, and his team. Characters from the spin-off series Gen V will also make appearances, building on storylines introduced in its second season. As the final season progresses towards its May 20th finale, it remains to be seen which characters won’t survive.
New episodes of The Boys season 5 premiere every Wednesday on Prime Video.
