Many of the actors from Game of Thrones have become major stars, and one of the leads is now starring in a gripping spy series that’s gaining momentum. Spy stories have always been popular – the James Bond films are a classic example. And we’ve seen a resurgence of the genre on television recently as well.
Spy thrillers have become increasingly popular on streaming services lately, and Apple TV+’s Slow Horses has gained a dedicated following thanks to its compelling plots and yearly new seasons. However, Slow Horses isn’t the only success story – Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other platforms are also offering popular spy series.
Spy thrillers are having a moment on television, with shows like The Night Agent, Black Doves, The Agency, Citadel, and The Sympathizer gaining popularity. A big draw for these series is their star power, featuring well-known actors such as Gary Oldman, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, Robert Downey Jr., and Richard Madden.
Following in the footsteps of her Game of Thrones co-star Richard Madden, Emilia Clarke—best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen—is now appearing in a spy thriller. Clarke stars in Ponies, an 8-episode series on Peacock that premiered on January 15th.
This Game Of Thrones Star Leads An Exciting Spy Thriller Series
The series Ponies features Clarke as Bea Grant and Haley Lu Richardson (from The White Lotus) as Twila Hasbeck. They play two secretaries working at the U.S. embassy in Moscow whose lives are turned upside down when their husbands – both spies – unexpectedly die. Determined to uncover the truth and assist the CIA, they secretly begin working as operatives themselves.
As a total cinema devotee, I’ve been really enjoying Ponies. It’s a super fun, quick-moving spy story with genuinely high stakes and a cast of leads you can’t help but like. Critics are loving it – it’s sitting at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes! Audiences agree, giving it a solid 83% score, which shows just how widely appealing it is. Plus, the show really nails the Cold War vibe, which is perfect for a spy thriller.
How Ponies Keeps Getting Better
The show Ponies has become popular largely thanks to the strong performances of Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson. They begin the series as ordinary secretaries, but quickly find themselves involved in a world of espionage. By the end of the first season, they’ve transformed into skilled agents, even though they’re still learning the ropes.
As a big fan of spy thrillers, I’ve been really impressed with how Ponies develops. Looking at the IMDb ratings, the first episode scored a 7.1, which is pretty good, but the season finale hit a 7.8! That shows you the show doesn’t just start strong, it actually gets better as it goes along. Honestly, that kind of growth is a big reason why I think it’s a series worth checking out if you’re into the genre.
