Starfield PS5 Pro Graphics Analysis – An Excellent Console Port

Bethesda’s highly anticipated space RPG, Starfield, is finally available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro! We’re still huge fans of this ambitious game, and now a new audience can experience its vast, open-world exploration and engaging New Game+ features. With plenty of fresh content added, Starfield is designed to keep players coming back for more as they discover everything it has to offer.

We’ve been thoroughly impressed with the PS5 Pro version of this game. We wanted to understand why – how could a game we originally played over two years ago still feel so visually captivating? Does this new PS5 port capture the spirit of the original? We’ll explore how Bethesda’s action RPG has successfully transitioned to this new platform and made such a strong impact.

Let’s dive right in.

PS5 Pro’s Various Graphical Options

The PS5 Pro lets you choose between different settings for how the game looks and runs. To give you clear results, we tested it in several ways: Performance mode with an open frame rate, Visuals mode at both 30 and 40 frames per second, and Enhanced mode also at 30 and 40 frames per second.

Visual Mode focuses on delivering the best possible graphics with sharp details in effects, lighting, and crowds. We tested it first, and it performed well, consistently hitting its target frame rate even during demanding scenes. Details remained clear and crisp, regardless of the game we played.

The game’s outdoor areas look fantastic, with smooth performance and no noticeable glitches. Textures are crisp and clear, and the lighting is particularly impressive, realistically illuminating scenes. The deep blacks of space looked amazing on a 4K TV, and details like the glow from the ship’s instruments were nearly perfect, creating a visually appealing experience overall.

Even when playing indoors, the game maintains its excellent visual quality, creating realistic and captivating scenes. We were especially impressed by the detailed character models and how their facial expressions perfectly match the voice acting, making Starfield incredibly immersive when played in Visual Mode.

If you want smoother gameplay at 60 frames per second or higher, Pro Performance mode delivers, even during chaotic battles on land or in space, though you might notice a few small issues. It achieves this by reducing the internal resolution, but uses a technology called PSSR upscaling to rebuild the image and maintain good visual quality. This means the graphics still look great, similar to what we said about Visual Mode. Luckily, the small trade-offs this mode makes won’t significantly impact your overall gaming experience.

You might notice textures aren’t quite as sharp, and occasionally things might briefly appear before fully loading, but these issues are minor. If you’re not overly concerned with these small details, the Pro Performance Mode will provide a great experience.

Starfield consistently delivers impressive visuals – character details, equipment, and ships all look fantastic – making it a standout game on the PS5 Pro. We often found ourselves getting sidetracked from the main story just to admire the beautiful environments, particularly the realistic lighting and atmospheric effects, which looked great no matter how we were playing.

The game consistently ran smoothly, even when moving between different environments and weather patterns. It also intelligently adjusted the lighting as needed and quickly optimized performance on the fly, delivering a generally high-quality visual experience with only occasional, minor issues.

Finally, there’s Enhanced mode, which takes full advantage of the PS5 Pro’s power to deliver the best possible graphics and resolution. We ultimately preferred this mode, as it really highlighted the game’s beautiful details and improved visual settings.

The game looks fantastic no matter what graphical settings you choose, and the framerate stays consistently smooth. You’ll be happy with any option, depending on what you prioritize. We especially liked the Enhanced visuals, but many players will likely prefer the faster Performance Mode.

But there’s another important question we must answer.

How Does It Measure Up Against The PC Version?

We started by testing the game on a powerful PC with a Ryzen 9 5950X processor, 96GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, and a fast NVMe SSD. This setup is much more powerful than what the game recommends, allowing us to run it with all the highest settings enabled. While the PC version generally performs better than the PlayStation 5 Pro, the difference isn’t huge, particularly when it comes to visual quality and other graphics settings.

The PC version offers noticeably sharper details and textures, and the improved hardware makes the lighting effects stand out more. However, both the PC and PS5 Pro deliver clean visuals, with the PS5 Pro’s upscaling technology effectively enhancing image quality in all modes.

When playing inside, during cutscenes, or while characters are talking, the PlayStation 5 Pro and the PC versions of the game look almost identical. This also applies to space environments, terrain details, shadows, and the number of people shown on screen. Both versions loaded the game just as quickly, and character appearances and equipment details were very similar on both platforms.

While Starfield runs best on powerful PCs, the upcoming PS5 Pro version delivers graphics that are nearly as impressive as the PC version at its highest quality settings.

Is Starfield Worth It On The PS5 Pro?

If the PS5 Pro is your main gaming system, it’s absolutely worth buying. It’s been improved with several updates, fixing initial problems, and it delivers stunning graphics with plenty of customizable settings to suit your preferences.

Starfield looks and plays amazingly well on the PS5 Pro, fully utilizing the console’s capabilities and DualSense features. We believe the PS5 Pro offers the best way to experience the game on consoles. The performance is so close to what we see on a high-end PC, making this an exceptional port that sets a high bar for future console versions. The game offers different modes that balance visual quality and performance effectively – we recommend trying them all to find what you prefer, as we found the Enhanced mode to be ideal.

If you’ve been waiting to play Starfield on the PS5 Pro before deciding, you can rest easy. It looks fantastic and runs smoothly, making it a worthwhile game to own. We’re going to get back to playing now – it’s still a truly impressive adventure!
