A new science fiction action movie with the potential to be as popular as is in development, and a director has been chosen to lead the project. Brad Bird, a highly respected director with a 30-year career, is known for his animated films. While he’s famous for directing both Incredibles movies (he won’t be directing a third), he’s also found success with other franchises. His work on 2007’s Ratatouille and even earlier, 1999’s The Iron Giant, demonstrates why he’s a sought-after director.
Animated movies have become incredibly popular recently, finding success both in cinemas and on streaming services. In 2025, Disney’s Zootopia 2 became one of the highest-grossing films of all time—and the most successful Disney animated movie ever. Netflix also saw huge success with KPop Demon Hunters, which became their most-watched film. Now, there’s another major animated movie to look forward to, just announced!

Netflix is creating a new animated movie called Ray Gunn, set to release in 2026. Brad Bird will direct, working from a script he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins. John Lasseter, formerly of Pixar, is producing alongside Bird and David Ellison, the CEO of Paramount Skydance. The movie will star as Raymond Gunn, as Venus Nova, and Tom Waits as Eyera. Netflix has shared a brief description of the film, hinting at the story to come.
Raymond Gunn, a detective in the sprawling, futuristic city of Metropia (imagined as it might have been in 1939), finds himself investigating a complex case filled with aliens and murder, all connected to a famous performer named Venus Nova.
I was so excited to hear about this new movie! Apparently, it’s been a passion project for the director, Bird, for over 30 years. He’s always loved both science fiction and those classic 1940s detective films, and he thought it would be a blast to combine the two – and honestly, it sounds incredible!
I’ve been thinking about ‘Ray Gunn’ for more than three decades. It’s a movie that mixes science fiction with the feel of old detective films from the 1940s—think ‘The Maltese Falcon’ crossed with ‘Buck Rogers.’ I’ve always loved both those kinds of movies, and combining them felt like a fun way to experiment with cinematic style and create really memorable characters.
He then talked about why many people don’t watch animated films or shows, and expressed his desire for them to appreciate it as a truly wonderful art form that’s often underestimated.
Many people don’t watch animation, and I’d really like to change their minds. It’s a fantastic art form that people often underestimate. Animation is such a versatile medium, and it shouldn’t be limited to just certain types of stories.
As of today, Ray Gunn doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but it’s currently planned to be released on Netflix in 2026.
