Cameron Diaz hadn’t acted in a while, leading many to believe she’d retired. However, after appearing with Jamie Foxx in last year’s film, Back in Action, she’s now committed to several new projects. One exciting venture involves bringing back a comedy movie that wasn’t successful when it first came out in 1989, but has since become a beloved classic for many fans.
According to Variety, Cameron Diaz is planning a sequel to Troop Beverly Hills, and will both produce and star in it. The project is currently in development at TriStar Pictures, with Laurence Mark and Katherine Power – who co-founded the wine brand Avaline with Diaz – also producing. Clea DuVall, known for directing films like The Intervention (2016) and Happiest Season (2020), wrote the script and will direct the sequel.
Following her popular role on Cheers, Troop Beverly Hills was one of several films designed to launch Shelley Long as a leading movie star. In it, she plays Phyllis Nefler, a wealthy woman whose failing marriage inspires her to bond with her daughter by becoming a leader for her Wilderness Scout troop. Predictably, Phyllis’s unfamiliarity with the outdoors causes plenty of funny situations, and, as often happens in these stories, everyone learns a valuable lesson by the end.
When Troop Beverly Hills first came out, critics didn’t like it and most people didn’t go see it, so it quickly disappeared from theaters. But surprisingly, over time, the movie gained a dedicated following and became a nostalgic favorite. It wasn’t a shock when the film celebrated its 30th anniversary with a reunion of the cast. Many of the young actresses who played the Wilderness Scouts alongside Shelley Long went on to become well-known stars – Carla Gugino (who stretched the truth about her age to land the role), Kellie Martin, Mary Gross, and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, plus Tori Spelling, who became famous the following year on Beverly Hills 90210.
We still don’t have a release date for the Troop Beverly Hills sequel, but Cameron Diaz fans won’t have to wait long for her next film. Outcome, a dark comedy, will debut on Apple TV on April 10th. The movie stars Keanu Reeves as a famous actor who is blackmailed with an embarrassing video from his past. Directed and co-written by Jonah Hill, the film boasts a great cast including Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, David Spade, and soap opera icon Susan Lucci, among others.
