PS5 Price Hike Hits Japan Hard as PS5 Pro Sales Sink to Xbox Levels

After Sony recently increased prices, there’s little incentive to buy an unlocked PS5 in Japan, and sales reflect that.

According to the newest sales figures from Famitsu, only 840 PS5 Pro consoles were sold between March 29th and April 5th. An additional 558 standard, disc-drive PS5 consoles were also purchased during that week.

These sales figures are very low compared to the PS5 Digital Edition, especially the less expensive, Japanese-language version. That model sold 12,141 units during this time, bringing the total sales across all versions to 13,539.

Here’s a look at last week’s console sales in Japan, with total sales since launch included in parentheses.

Switch 2
59,543 (5,011,059)
PS5 Digital Edition
12,141 (1,248,515)
Switch OLED
7,468 (9,526,329)
Switch Lite
4,807 (6,903,964)
Switch
4,067 (20,0271,045)
PS5 Pro
840 (341,548)
PS5
558 (5,910,474)
Xbox Series X
525 (325,952)
Xbox Series X DE
278 (29,362)
Xbox Series S
129 (341,622)

Sony raised the price of the PlayStation 5 on April 2nd. Here’s a look at how much the different versions now cost:

PS5 DE Japan
¥55,000 (~$344)
PS5 Digital Edition
¥89,980 (~$562)
PS5
¥97,980 (~$612)
PS5 Pro
¥137,980 (~$862)

Buying a standard PS5 console with a disc drive costs nearly double the price of the digital-only version, making the choice pretty straightforward. Sony has also stated they don’t currently intend to raise the price of the model sold only in Japan.

We anticipate continued declining sales of both the models supporting multiple languages and the higher-priced PS5 Pro in the local market. Unless Sony lowers prices, we don’t foresee significant domestic sales of these products in the near future.

This is creating more challenges for PlayStation in Japan, as the Switch 2 is selling very quickly. It has already sold over five million units, while the PS5 has reached 7.5 million – but the Switch 2 has been available for less than a year.

It’s still unclear what Sony’s plan is to fix this, but they clearly still prioritize the Japanese market. They wouldn’t have released a Japan-only version of the console if they weren’t focused on competing within the country.
