Simon McQuoid’s 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot faced a tough launch, debuting both in theaters and on HBO Max during the COVID-19 pandemic when many cinemas were still closed or operating at reduced capacity. While it earned $84.4 million worldwide in theaters—despite a $55 million budget—this didn’t fully reflect how popular the movie was. It became Warner Bros.’ most-watched film on HBO Max for the year, proving its success with audiences. This strong performance led to a sequel, Mortal Kombat II, and now a third film is already being planned. Mortal Kombat II Is Fixing the First Movie’s Mistakes

While the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie did well on streaming, critics and fans had mixed reactions. Many didn’t like the new main character, Cole Young, and felt the story focused too much on the events before the actual tournament. The sequel, Mortal Kombat II, fixes these issues by putting the Earthrealm champions directly against Emperor Shao Kahn in the tournament fans were waiting for. Importantly, it also introduces Johnny Cage, a hugely popular character from the games. Cage often acts as a way for audiences to connect with the story, making this sequel a great starting point for viewers new to the Mortal Kombat universe.

The new footage shows a strong focus on faithfully recreating characters from the game, rather than creating new ones. Joining the cast are Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Quan Chi (Damon Herriman), and Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen), all important figures in Mortal Kombat lore. The magical powers, or arcana, from the first film are also returning, as they’ve become a key part of the series’ story. The marketing heavily features the brutal finishing moves, called Fatalities, which earned the film an R-rating due to “strong bloody violence and gore.” This suggests the filmmakers listened to feedback on the first movie and are aiming to deliver a better sequel, which is encouraging for video game adaptations.

Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 8, 2026.
