2025 saw Disney’s live-action reboot of Lilo & Stitch emerge as one of the year’s most successful films, raking in a staggering 1 billion at the box office. Interestingly, Disney had already approved a sequel well before this, which seems quite logical in retrospect. As of now, specific details about the sequel are scarce since the original movie is still playing in cinemas. However, longtime fans received some fantastic news that hints at a promising future for the sequel when it eventually premieres.
According to THR, Chris Sanders, best known as the voice of Stitch in both the live-action and animated versions of Lilo & Stitch, is close to finalizing a deal with Disney to pen the script for the live-action sequel. This news is music to the ears of longtime fans of the Stitch franchise, given that Sanders played a pivotal role in creating, writing, and directing the 2002 animated film. His involvement in the creation process, coupled with his portrayal of Stitch’s voice, promises to elevate the quality of the sequel even further.
Beyond his contributions to Stitch, Sanders played a role in crafting the beloved DreamWorks Animation production, The Wild Robot, and is presently working on its sequel script. Contrary to popular belief, Sanders will only be penning the screenplay for the sequel, not directing it as well. Dean Fleischer Camp directed the recent live-action adaptation, and there’s speculation he might be involved in the sequel too, but that hasn’t been officially announced. What has been verified is that Jonathan Eirich will produce the sequel. The initial live-action movie was authored by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Chris Van Waes.
Lilo & Stitch represents a triumphant stride forward in Disney’s live-action productions, following a series of ups and downs recently. For instance, the remake of Snow White didn’t fare well at box offices, accumulating roughly $205 million globally. However, The Lion King (2024) had a sluggish start but managed to maintain its popularity, resulting in a substantial $722 million worldwide revenue. Similarly, The Little Mermaid (2023), despite a slow beginning, eventually amassed an impressive $569 million globally when it concluded its theatrical run.
For the follow-up of Lilo & Stitch, there’s a wealth of concepts to draw upon due to the television series and two straight-to-video movies. Additionally, several beloved characters can be incorporated, such as Angel and Leroy, which will undoubtedly add to the sequel’s already exciting dynamic (in a fun and entertaining way).
