Emperor Palpatine was a significant villain in the original Star Wars films, especially after he appeared in The Empire Strikes Back. However, audiences didn’t fully understand the extent of his scheming until the prequel trilogy. While he was clearly evil and demonstrated powerful Force abilities in the original films, the prequels revealed that he was the one who secretly planned and caused the fall of both the Jedi Order and the Republic.
Palpatine’s plan wasn’t fully understood until Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, and even then, Star Wars: The Clone Wars added significant depth. However, the Star Wars story continues to expand on how Palpatine gained power. The new show, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, recently revealed a Sith ability that clarifies how Palpatine knew how to defeat the Jedi and the Republic, and why his plan worked so well.
Maul – Shadow Lord Confirms A New Sith Power

The series Maul – Shadow Lord revisits Maul’s story after his fall from being a true Sith (and therefore no longer using the title ‘Darth’) during the chaotic early years following the Clone Wars. Like many Force-sensitive individuals at this time, Maul operates from the shadows, building influence within the galaxy’s criminal organizations. The first episode establishes that he leverages a unique dark side power – one not previously explored in Star Wars – to aid his rise to power.
Maul believes their actions are part of a larger plan, stating that things are ‘falling into place.’ This implies he can sense future events, even if he doesn’t fully understand them yet. If this is true, it would explain how Palpatine was able to gain power and trick the Jedi Order so effectively in the prequel trilogy, despite being right under their noses.
The Jedi Weren’t Fools; They Had Little Chance To Begin With

It seems strange that the Jedi didn’t realize Palpatine was a Sith, especially in the prequel films. While he hides it well in The Phantom Menace, by Attack of the Clones, it’s almost obvious to viewers that he’s a Sith Lord. Despite working closely with him, the Jedi never suspect a thing.
The most common theory is that something sinister fueled Palpatine’s rise to power, possibly a connection to the dark side of the Force through the Sith – though not that he was a Sith Lord himself. The Jedi Order is often faulted for not recognizing this, especially since powerful members like Yoda should have been able to sense his presence. While explanations exist – like Palpatine using the Force to conceal his true nature – it still feels strange that the Jedi were so unaware of what was happening.
If Maul’s explanation is correct, it suggests a Sith ability to sense events unfolding, which makes Palpatine’s actions more understandable. He was likely receiving guidance through the Force, helping him know what to do and when. This also explains why the Jedi were fooled – it highlights the immense power of the dark side, rather than their own failings. Ultimately, this interpretation helps resolve a major plot hole in the Star Wars prequels and makes the story more logical.
Star Wars Is Constantly Correcting This Prequel Trilogy Flaw

Although the Star Wars prequel trilogy initially received a lot of criticism, it’s now often considered a strong part of the franchise, with Revenge of the Sith being a particular favorite. They aren’t flawless, however. A major criticism was how easily the Jedi, despite their power and connection to the Force, were tricked. Fortunately, in the over two decades since Revenge of the Sith came out, newer Star Wars content has helped to address and improve upon this issue.
The Clone Wars series did a lot to fill in the gaps between the prequel movies. More recently, projects like the comic Maul – Shadow Lord have revealed even more about Palpatine, the dark side of the Force, and the existing problems within the Jedi Order during that time. Maul’s account of how things unfolded could be the latest piece of this growing, more complete picture.
