When it was announced that Steven Spielberg would direct Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, everyone knew it was a major event, given the reputations of both directors.
Spielberg directs Nolan’s Interstellar …..
Spielberg initially planned to direct the film and had been involved for about a year. He spent considerable time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, consulting with scientists and aerospace engineers. He even hired Jonathan Nolan, Chris Nolan’s brother, to write the first two drafts, but it didn’t quite work out. Jonah, a colleague, predicted that Chris would take on the project if Spielberg decided to move on, and he was right. As soon as Spielberg stepped away, Chris Nolan quickly signed on. Spielberg believes that ‘Interstellar’ ultimately became a better film under Chris Nolan’s direction than it would have been with him at the helm.
So what happened if Spielberg directs Nolan’s Interstellar project?
Christopher Nolan recently shared the story of how Steven Spielberg almost directed Interstellar. Nolan told Timothée Chalamet that shortly after they worked together on The Dark Knight, Nolan’s brother began working with Spielberg. Spielberg spent years developing the Interstellar script, exploring many different versions. However, the project didn’t gain real traction until Spielberg was ready to commit. When Spielberg moved on to another film, the opportunity became available for Nolan to direct it himself.
I spoke with Jonathan many times over the years about his work and goals, and I was really impressed by what he was doing. His first project especially stood out. I’d been playing with the idea of time travel myself, with some unfinished projects on the topic. When the opportunity arose, I asked Jonathan if he’d be okay with me taking his project and merging it with my own ideas, while still staying true to his original vision. He agreed, recognizing that I wanted to achieve the same exciting results he’d initially hoped for.
The outcome for each director….
Released in November 2014, ‘Interstellar’ was a critical and commercial success for its director, earning $681 million globally and receiving five Academy Award nominations, including a win for Best Visual Effects. The director later helmed ‘Bridge of Spies,’ which earned Mark Rylance an Oscar for Best Actor.
