Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon lets you deeply customize your character with a huge variety of weapons, spells, armor, and accessories – more than most open-world RPGs. Players are naturally curious about which combinations are the most powerful, or ‘broken’, in the game.
This list will help players choose some of the strongest classes and character builds available early in the game. These options will let them deal a lot of damage, stay alive, move stealthily, and cast powerful spells. They’re incredibly effective and, most importantly, really enjoyable to play.
1. Arcane Archer
Extreme Damage Output And Rapid Shots
- Pros: Greatest Damage Output and Ranged Combat
- Cons: Requires Lots Of Arrows & Mana
The Arcane Archer is a straightforward but powerful character build that excels in both damage and survivability. Combining magical abilities with skillful archery, it’s incredibly effective at long and medium distances, and offers a way to escape dangerous close-quarters fights.
The Archer class is already great at quickly defeating enemies, but you can make it even more powerful by adding some magic and focusing on Spirit to boost damage, especially when using the Arcanist’s Bow. To build this character effectively, prioritize maxing out Dexterity and Perception as you level up, followed by Spirituality. The Arcanist’s Bow adds magic damage to each arrow, using mana in the process, so remember to bring mana potions to keep your attacks flowing.
For this build, the best gear combination is the Hatchling Mask, Hunting Jacket (reduces bow stamina cost by 15%), Archer Quicken gloves (increases bow draw speed by 10%), Hunting Trousers (lowers dash stamina cost by 5% while using a bow), and Leather Boots of Roots (immobilizes enemies hit by your attacks for 5 seconds).
To maximize your bow damage, combine the Archer Ring (adds 15% damage), the Marksman Treasure (boosts ranged critical hit chance by 25%), and the Hunter’s Amulet (increases weakspot damage by 20%). Focus on bow-related perks, and prioritize upgrading Quickened Strikes and Tools of Trade within the Attack Speed section of the Dexterity skill tree.
In the Perception skill tree, prioritize Extra Lucky, Critical Cascade, and Go For The Eyes. If you have any skill points left, invest them in maximizing Movement from the Dexterity tree. For spells, choose Banish, Crippling Bolt, and Weightbound – these are all excellent crowd control options that will quickly disable your enemies.
2. Spell Blade
Powerful Spells At The Cost Of Defense
- Pros: Highest Damage output of all spellcasters, can switch to melee
- Cons: Squishy, vulnerable when surrounded
The Spellblade is a versatile character build that blends magical ability with physical combat. It uses a combination of Spirit, Stamina, and Skill to deliver high damage with both spells and short swords. To make this build effective, you’ll need special magical weapons like the Tidepiercer or Sunfire Shortsword, which unleash magical energy with their attacks. Focus on increasing your Spell Damage, Spell Critical chance, and how quickly you regain Mana. Prioritize upgrading your Spirit stats to boost both combat abilities and overall character strength.
As a critic, I always advise players to invest in Movement and Attack Speed – usually through Dexterity – because it makes a huge difference in how nimble your character feels. Being able to quickly dodge and precisely land attacks is key. While some heavier weapons need a bit of Strength, most magical blades really focus on Dexterity and Spirituality, so prioritize those stats if you’re going that route.
When building your character, start with the Waning Moon Set. Then, add two Rings of Protection to boost your defense and the Horned Warden’s Amulet to increase your magical power, critical hit chance, and mana capacity. For spells, focus on learning Merlin’s Wrath and Scorching Pathway – they’re quick, accurate, and deal significant damage.
3. Battlemage
Avalon’s Wand And Sword Techiques Are Broken
- Pros: Versatile, uses wands, cubes, and blades
- Cons: Spells are weaker and costly
This build is similar to the Spellblade, but relies on Soul Cubes instead of spells. These cubes gain elemental power from magic blades and wands – especially the Hexbounce Wand found in the Lake of Blood Dungeon, which can deflect attacks and create devastating area-of-effect damage. Focus on increasing your Spirituality, Strength, and Dexterity to equip a variety of weapons and armor.
Okay, so if you’re starting out with this build, the Battlemage set is a solid choice. But trust me, you’ll want to switch over to Perceval’s Set and Blades as soon as you can snag them from the Corrupted Temple in Cuanacht – that’s Act 2, by the way. Perk-wise, definitely focus on Wands & Cubes to really boost those accessories. And don’t forget to max out your One Handed skill from Strength; unlocking those dual-wielding perks is huge and works amazingly well with a wand and blade combo.
Changing from single swords that use Soul Cubes (like the Reaper’s Shroud, which powers up by dealing damage or defeating enemies) can make this build much more versatile, particularly in difficult battles. For rings, choose the Swordsman Amulet to increase all your damage by 25% when using two swords, and the Mana Ring to increase your maximum mana.
Useful amulets include the All-Mother’s Protection, which boosts your health and reduces damage when you’re critically low on health (below 10%). For players who have the Sanctuary of Sarras expansion, the Endless Dirge set is a strong choice to increase both your magical power and ability to survive.
4. Assassin
Sneak, And One Shot Everything (Except Some Bosses)
- Pros: Sneaky and can OHKO almost anything
- Cons: Squishy, loses its main advantage in boss battles
The Assassin excels at stealth and quick movement, allowing them to eliminate enemies silently from the shadows using knives or daggers. They deal massive damage with surprise attacks and move so quietly they can approach almost any foe undetected, often defeating them with a single, well-aimed strike.
This build isn’t very adaptable when facing multiple enemies at once, and it can have trouble with boss fights that can’t be easily won through stealth or exploiting weaknesses.
To deal massive damage, focus on boosting your Perception and Dexterity stats. Then, equip the Assassin’s Set along with the Wolf’s Fang daggers to significantly increase your Sneak damage – up to 3.5 times the normal amount. Further enhance your damage with the Swordsman’s Ring, which provides a 25% damage boost, and increase your critical hit chance by using the Perilous Orb and Colm’s Finger Necklace.
To get the most out of your character, focus on improving Daggers, Critical Hit chance, and Stealth skills. If you have any skill points left over, put them into One-Handed weapons and Movement speed to become even more effective in combat.
5. Heavy Knight
The Optimal Tank, Survive Anything, Crush Everything
- Pros: Unstoppable, Near-Immortal
- Cons: Slow and repetitive gameplay
The Heavy Knight is a powerful and durable character, built to withstand any challenge. Equipped with strong two-handed weapons and boasting high stamina and health, they can march across the battlefield largely unaffected by enemy attacks – whether it’s swords, arrows, or magic. This build excels at wearing down opponents, ensuring victory through sheer resilience and devastating attacks, all while effectively blocking incoming damage with heavy armor.
This build works best for players who prioritize Endurance, Strength, and Dexterity. The Lancelot armor set is highly recommended – you’ll need at least 15 Strength, 15 Endurance, and 8 Dexterity to get the most out of it – and will really enhance your Heavy Knight. Also, the Aerondigh Two-Handed Sword is a fantastic addition, as its damage increases by up to 150% the lower your health gets.
When improving your character, focus first on the Two Handed and General skills within the Strength tree. After that, prioritize Stamina and Health from the Endurance tree. If you want to become even tougher, unlock the Red Death skill tree and put points into Survival. Adding a few points to Combat can also boost your damage output.
When choosing rings, we recommend the Ring of Despair (reduces damage taken by 15% and healing received by 50%) and the Oldsteel Ring (increases Stamina and Health by 3%). For your amulet, choose either the Amber Gris Fragment or the All Mother’s Protection Amulet. If you’re playing the Sanctuary of Sarras expansion, you can also find the Blackwater Set, a powerful alternative obtained through exploration and puzzle-solving in the new areas.
6. Blood Knight
For Those Who Love Vicious And Bloody Combat
- Pros: Tanky, Versatile
- Cons: A Little Bit Slow
Blood Knights are powerful fighters who combine magic with swords and shields to defeat enemies. They excel at both dealing damage and sustaining themselves in combat, draining life with each attack and causing opponents to bleed using Blood Magic. To build an effective Blood Knight, focus on increasing Strength, Endurance, Spirituality, and Dexterity.
The Blood Transfusion spell is essential, and it works best when combined with Abhartach’s Calling (Corpse Explosion). When leveling up, focus on increasing your Shield and Health through Endurance and Strength perks. Take most of the Healing perks, but only get the Healthy Appetite perk once to unlock the rest.
When choosing equipment, the Dueling Knight Set – including the Dueling Shield – is a great choice. To maximize health recovery, also equip the Cloak of Retribution and the Cursed Blood Blade, both of which provide extra life steal with each attack. For rings, the Bloodstone Ring (for more life steal) combined with a protection ring for added armor is recommended. Finally, be sure to get the Annabelle amulet – a nod to the horror movie doll – as it restores health and provides a bonus after each kill.
The skills Abhartach’s Calling and Blood/Life Transfusion have been weakened because they were excessively strong. Despite these changes, this character build is still very effective at dealing damage and staying alive.
7. Berserker
As The Name Implies, It Will Fight To The Death
- Pros: Fast, Furious, Deadly
- Cons: Weakness to ranged opponents
The Berserker is a powerful enemy known for fighting with two weapons and quickly healing. To make them even stronger, focus on maximizing the Red Death Combat and Survival perks. Then, improve their Endurance, Stamina, and Health. Don’t forget to unlock all the perks in the One-Handed skill tree, as these will also help with dual-wielding.
Here’s a good equipment combination to try: Molten Lightning gloves (reduce stamina used when dual-wielding by 20%), Harness of the Hollow Sun (causes enemies that hit you to bleed), Knight’s Helmet (lowers stamina cost for all actions by 20%), Garb of the Hollow Sun (boosts your stamina recovery when enemies are bleeding), and Boots of the Hollow Sun (increases your movement speed as nearby opponents bleed).
When choosing weapons, consider either the Inferno Blade and Frost Blade, or the Honorary Blade and Ravencrest Executioner. The Inferno and Frost Blades work incredibly well together, boosting your damage by 220% and inflicting both burn and frostbite. Alternatively, the Honorary Blade and Ravencrest Executioner deal increased damage to enemies who are both at full health and have no stamina – a perfect combination you can achieve by using a dual-wielding power attack.
