5 Criminally Cancelled Sci-Fi Shows We’ll Never Get Over

Science fiction is a hugely popular genre, but some examples are infamous rather than celebrated. From its beginnings, sci-fi has captivated audiences worldwide and continues to be incredibly successful, with many sci-fi TV shows becoming true classics. Like any TV genre, a show’s longevity usually depends on both good reviews and a loyal audience – networks are much more likely to continue a show that’s well-made and has a strong following.

It’s always disappointing when a good show ends too soon. Throughout the history of science fiction television, several truly excellent shows have been cancelled, and many fans still feel the loss years later. It’s especially frustrating when a promising show doesn’t get the chance to reach its full potential. Here are a few sci-fi series whose cancellations we’re still sad about.

5) FlashForward

I was really hooked by FlashForward. It wasn’t your typical sci-fi show, but the idea was fascinating – almost everyone suddenly saw a few minutes of their future! The show followed a group trying to figure out what caused it and what it all meant. I was so invested, but it got cancelled after just one season, and the big cliffhanger at the end was never explained. It was incredibly frustrating to see all that potential just… wasted, and to be left with so many unanswered questions.

4) Almost Human

I recently revisited Almost Human, and it’s a shame this sci-fi show didn’t last. It’s a bit under the radar, but it really resonated with those of us who watched it. The show paired Karl Urban – playing a cop who really didn’t trust technology – with Michael Ealy as his android partner, and their dynamic was fantastic. It perfectly blended a gritty police procedural with interesting sci-fi ideas, and the chemistry between Urban and Ealy was electric. It’s frustrating because, after just one season, it was cancelled, even though the show clearly had a lot more story to tell and so much potential to explore its world and characters further.

3) Counterpart

Among the many excellent sci-fi shows cut short, Counterpart deserves more recognition. The series starred JK Simmons as Howard Silk, an ordinary UN employee who discovers his office holds a secret gateway to a parallel world – and that his counterpart there is a dangerous spy. While critics loved its two seasons and 20 episodes, the show was unfortunately cancelled before it could gain a larger audience. It’s disappointing, because Counterpart had a lot more story to tell, making its ending particularly frustrating for fans who followed Silk’s journey.

2) The OA

As a huge sci-fi fan, I still think about The OA a lot. It wasn’t just a good show – it was really good – which made its cancellation by Netflix so frustrating. The story starts with Prairie Johnson, a young woman who vanished for years and then suddenly reappears with her sight restored. It’s a really complex and fascinating story that grabbed a lot of us, but Netflix surprisingly pulled the plug after only two seasons. It felt so abrupt, and we never got to see how the amazing story was going to end, which was a real shame.

1) Firefly

Despite lasting only 14 episodes, Firefly remains a beloved and famously short-lived sci-fi series. Though cancelled early, the show found new life through a feature film, comics, and novels that expanded its universe. Fans still lament the show’s premature end, as Firefly was exceptional from the start, and its cancellation remains baffling even after twenty years. It’s hard to accept that we missed out on so many potential seasons.
