A new Borderlands game unexpectedly appeared on iPhones and iPads without any announcement from the developers.
After a couple of uneven installments, Borderlands 4 revitalized the series late last year.
So, it looks like 2K, the folks behind Borderlands, are making a free-to-play mobile game! They’re working with NaturalMotion, which is owned by Zynga, to bring it to life. We don’t have a name for it yet, but I’m already pretty excited to see what they come up with.
The game, currently known as ‘Borderlands Mobile,’ was released without any advance publicity – there were no press releases, social media announcements, or even a trailer to promote it.
This game is set between the storylines of Borderlands 3 and the upcoming Borderlands 4. Currently, you can only play as one character, but three more are planned for release later on.
Players have pointed out that the game uses many assets from previous Borderlands games. However, it also includes popular features like end-game challenges, raids, weapon improvements, and the ability to break down items for parts.
So, the game has a Battle Pass, which is pretty standard for a free mobile game like this one. Honestly, I’m not sure yet how important it’ll be to actually playing the game, but it’s there.

Some players thought the game’s sudden release was a mistake, since there hadn’t been any prior announcements. However, a 2K representative told Forbes that this wasn’t the case.
We’re constantly looking for ways to bring Borderlands to more players. Currently, Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is testing a new Borderlands mobile game for a limited time. Gearbox is helping to shape the game by providing its expertise on the series’ story, characters, and overall world.
“We hope that players enjoy this new Borderlands experience and look forward to their feedback.”
Right now, the game is only playable on iPhones and iPads in the United States through the App Store. It also has limited features at launch, with more to be unlocked later.
This is just a short-term test, so we don’t know yet when the game will be available to players in other regions or on Android devices.
Since the game doesn’t have a title yet, we expect it will take a significant amount of time to be released.
