It appears Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which launched five years ago on PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch (through cloud streaming), is coming to the next-generation Nintendo Switch. Although there’s no official confirmation yet, the game has been rated by Taiwan’s Digital Game Rating Committee, according to Gematsu.
Although a release date hasn’t been set, the game listing reveals that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for Nintendo Switch 2 will likely receive a PG-12 rating due to violence and some strong language.
In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, you play as Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, and lead the Guardians of the Galaxy. The game’s story is set after a big conflict called the Galactic War, involving Thanos and the Chitauri. The team – Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer – will be instantly recognizable to fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, though this is a separate storyline. You can find our original review for a more in-depth look at the game.
By November 2022, over 8 million people had played Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. According to Phil Rogers, CEO of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, the game’s availability on services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus significantly boosted player numbers. He recently shared that the team is very proud of the game and excited about its future commercial success within the company.
Although critics generally liked Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the game didn’t sell as many copies as Disney had hoped. Despite this, Sean Shoptaw, Disney’s head of gaming, indicated in 2023 that they’d be open to collaborating with the development studio again. He explained that making video games is difficult, even with strong source material and a good story.
So, I just saw a listing that suggests a Nintendo Switch 2 is in the works, which is awesome! But it kinda hit different because I also found out that Eidos Montreal, the team behind some cool games, just had a bunch of layoffs – like, 124 people lost their jobs. Even their studio head, David Anfossi, is moving on. It’s a bittersweet moment, you know? Excited for new hardware, but sad to see people lose their jobs.
Eidos-Montréal announced a workforce reduction affecting 124 employees, explaining that changing project requirements have led to the changes across their production and support teams. The studio acknowledged today is a challenging day, but emphasized the need to focus resources where they can have the biggest impact.
I was really surprised to hear that David Anfossi is leaving Eidos Montréal after being Head of Studio for so long! They’ve announced he and the studio are going their separate ways, and while it’s sad to see him go, everyone’s thankful for all he did and wishes him well. They’re already working on a plan to find a new leader, and I’m looking forward to hearing who they choose next.
