Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair Season 2 Return Potential Addressed By Creator

Be warned, there are minor spoilers ahead for the new series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair! It took two decades to finally launch the show, and its creator, Linwood Boomer, advises fans not to expect new episodes immediately.

This new series on Disney+ and Hulu continues the story of the beloved sitcom, following Malcolm as an adult. He’s trying to balance his life with his teenage daughter and girlfriend, but keeps it hidden from his family. When his parents, Hal and Lois, plan a big party for their 40th anniversary, Malcolm gets pulled back into the familiar craziness of his childhood home.

Before the premiere of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Linwood Boomer and Tracy Katsky. Boomer indicated that this revival is likely a one-time event, explaining it only worked because Bryan Cranston was able to participate despite being very busy with major films and Broadway shows. Katsky playfully added that Cranston is quite successful.

The show’s creator said Frankie is currently juggling a lot of commitments, making it difficult to plan a full new season with both of them. Still, the Emmy-winning creator enjoyed bringing the show back and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of it returning in the future.

Linwood Boomer believes a very specific set of circumstances would need to occur for that to happen. He doubts he’ll still be working on it if it takes another 17 years, but hopes one of his children might take it on.

Getting a Malcolm in the Middle revival made took a long time. Bryan Cranston was a major supporter of the idea and often spoke about wanting to bring the show back. Frankie Muniz revealed that Cranston even started writing a script for a reunion movie. One of the reasons the project stalled was because they were waiting for Erik Per Sullivan (who played Dewey, nicknamed ‘Boomer’) to give his approval before continuing without him.

Bryan Cranston, also known as Boomer, recently told ScreenRant that the long wait for a Malcolm in the Middle revival was partly because he hadn’t come up with a good way to bring the show back. He’d used up all his ideas during the original series and was content with retirement. However, he started thinking about how his own life had changed since the show ended, which gave him the inspiration to update the series with Malcolm now as a father.

Although the recent revival of Malcolm in the Middle seems like a limited series for now, it definitely leaves the door open for more seasons if the creators decide to continue. The ending introduced a mystery about Tristan’s past, revealed to Malcolm, which could be explored further in future episodes without harming their relationship. This provides a solid foundation for a potential season 2 and beyond, whether with the original team or new contributors.

Meanwhile, Christopher Masterson returns as Francis, and Emy Coligado as Piama, both now living with Hal and Lois while trying to start a family. The new season will also follow Vaughan Murrae’s Kelly as they plan for life after high school, and Malcolm’s daughter Leah as she adjusts to her growing family. Dewey, now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, is mostly focused on his career as a concert pianist, but these storylines all offer exciting possibilities for the show’s future.

Whether or not Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair gets more seasons depends on how many people watch it. 20th Television and Hulu/Disney+ need good viewership numbers to justify continuing the show. They’ve had success with bringing back other popular sitcoms – like the recent revival of King of the Hill – and these revivals often get renewed for multiple seasons.

The revival series, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, is receiving mostly positive feedback from both critics and viewers. It currently has an 80% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This positive reception could generate strong word-of-mouth, making the revival a success and encouraging the studio and streaming service to begin discussions with Bryan Cranston (Boomer) about continuing the show for additional seasons.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is now streaming in its entirety on Hulu and Disney+.
