The Spring 2026 anime season is here, and it’s looking fantastic! Along with brand new series like Witch Hat Atelier and Marriagetoxin, we’re also getting returning favorites. Fans will be thrilled to see the fourth season of Ascendance of a Bookworm, a popular isekai anime based on the acclaimed light novel by Miya Kazuki (with illustrations by You Shiina). The novel ran from 2015 to 2023, and the anime and manga adaptations have been widely praised for their creative story and imaginative world.
I noticed a big controversy erupted after the fourth season of the series premiered, and it all centered around the opening theme. The first three seasons were handled by Ajia-do studio, but for this new season, WIT Studio – a really well-respected animation company – took over. Unfortunately, many fans claimed the opening used AI-generated imagery, and they were pretty upset about it. The season actually launched on April 4th, 2026, and within a week, the studio finally responded to the accusations.
WIT Studio Apologizes After Admitting to AI Allegations

The animation studio addressed recent concerns about its work on X. In a statement, they explained that they reviewed how the opening sequence was made after receiving feedback on April 4, 2026. The review confirmed that generative AI tools were used to create some of the shots in the opening sequence.
The studio discovered that AI-generated images were mistakenly used in some of the background art. They’ve committed to releasing a revised opening sequence with newly drawn backgrounds. The studio emphasized that they do not allow the use of AI in their work and have taken responsibility for this error, confirming that the art director and background studio were not involved.
WIT Studio Conducted an Investigation Following Fan Outrage

The problem started when viewers noticed flaws in the animation’s backgrounds – things like blurry spots, strange colors, and odd shapes that didn’t seem to fit. After seeing the criticism, the studio looked into the issues and released a statement. The anime’s official social media account also apologized for the poor quality of the opening sequence.
The animated episodes haven’t received the same complaints, and any differences in the art style are mostly noticeable in the opening sequence. The next episode comes out on April 11th at 2:30 AM Pacific Time. We don’t know yet when the English-dubbed versions will be available, but we should get an update after the second or third episode of the season airs.
