While many cards feature impressive art, the most visually striking ones – like Special Illustration Rares – are usually the most valuable, especially if they’re rare promotional cards. Interestingly, even cards that look almost the same can sell for very different prices. A recent example is a Snorlax promo card that suddenly became much more valuable.

This Pokémon card is from the popular Scarlet & Violet 151 set, which was released in 2023 and focuses on the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region. Because the first generation of Pokémon remains so popular, this set is one of the most requested releases from the Scarlet & Violet series. Promo cards, like the Snorlax full art promo, are especially valuable. However, before you consider selling, it’s important to check for a specific detail – it can make some versions of the card worth almost $260 more, even without professional grading.

Pokemon TCG‘s $300 Snorlax Has Just One Difference From Its $30 Counterpart

As a Pokémon fan, I’ve been really excited to see the special Elite Trainer Boxes the Pokémon Center has been releasing since 2021! They usually cost a little more – about ten bucks – but they’re totally worth it if you collect. Not only do they have awesome, unique packaging, but you also get extra booster packs. And with the Scarlet & Violet sets, they made things even cooler by adding a special Pokémon Center stamp to the promo cards inside. It really makes them feel extra special and limited!

Promotional cards, like the Snorlax included with Pokemon Scarlet & Violet 151, all feature the same artwork. This means whether you buy booster boxes from a local game store or the Pokemon Center, you’ll generally get the same promotional cards. However, as the Snorlax promo from 151 shows, even small variations can significantly affect how much a card is worth on the resale market.

Snorlax cards obtained from Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) have a special marking that sets them apart from regular Black Star promo cards. You’ll find a small Pokemon Center stamp below the attack details, indicating the card is rarer and typically more valuable. While some people might not like how the stamp looks, it significantly increases the card’s worth. These promo cards are more expensive because Pokemon Center ETBs are exclusive and hard to find.

The price difference for Snorlax cards is quite significant. A standard Black Star promo is worth around $30, but a perfect PSA 10 graded version can sell for up to $234. However, the Pokemon Center promo version, even though it looks the same with just a small stamp difference, is much more valuable. An ungraded version costs nearly $300, and a PSA 10 grade can fetch as much as $1,660. That’s over $200 more for an ungraded card, and a difference of over $1,300 for a top-graded PSA 10.

The price difference isn’t unique to the Snorlax card. Generally, Pokémon Center promotional cards are worth much more than the standard, almost identical, Black Star versions. This is a notable trend in the Pokémon Trading Card Game market – a small detail like where a card comes from can dramatically affect its value, even if the cards look the same at first.
