Ah, behold the grand spectacle! Crypto companies and the august authorities, in a rare moment of accord, unite in the grand farce known as “Operation Atlantic”. A most noble endeavor, no doubt, to thwart the knaves and scoundrels who prey upon the unsuspecting with their crypto fraud schemes and approval-phishing attacks. Pray, tell, is it not too late for the poor souls already ensnared?

A Transnational Farce Against Crypto Phishing Scams

Operation Atlantic, a joint UK-US-Canada venture led by the esteemed National Crime Agency and the US Secret Service, doth strive to act in “near real time” – a phrase that doth tickle the ribs, for what is time but a jest in the realm of bureaucracy? Assisted by the likes of Chainalysis, a company that doth claim to decipher the cryptic language of the blockchain, they seek to unmask the rogues before the spoils vanish into the ether. A most ambitious quest, indeed!

As Chainalysis doth proclaim with great fanfare:

Operation Atlantic’s objective is simple, yet as grand as a Shakespearean tragedy: to spot the victims and their compromised wallets in real time, to freeze and secure the ill-gotten gains before they are laundered through exchanges, and to unearth new leads on the fraud networks. A veritable detective’s dream, wouldst thou not agree?

The First Fruits of This Noble Endeavor

Lo, the operation, announced with great pomp last month, hath borne its first fruits. The National Crime Agency (NCA) of the United Kingdom doth report that over 20,000 victims have been identified, with more than 20,000 wallet addresses flagged and a staggering $12 million in suspected scam proceeds frozen. A triumph, perchance, but one must wonder: how much hath already slipped through their fingers?

More than $45 million stolen in cryptocurrency fraud schemes hath been identified worldwide. A sum that would make even the most frugal of misers weep.

One poor soul in the UK, alas, lost more than £52,000 to these cunning schemes. A tragedy, indeed, but one that doth serve as a cautionary tale for the rest of us.

Phishing 101: A Lesson in Deception

In these approval phishing scams, victims are lured into signing malicious on-chain approvals, granting the scammers free rein to plunder their wallets. Disguised as investment opportunities or “account security” prompts, these schemes are the work of organized fraud networks that rely on the ignorance of their prey. A most devious tactic, wouldst thou not say?

Just yesterday, our sister website NewsBTC reported that South Korean authorities are implementing a new standardized withdrawal delay across all exchanges to thwart these swift-footed scammers. A wise move, perchance, but will it be enough to outwit the cunning foxes?

Last month, the Solana memecoin issuance platform Bonk.fun fell victim to a phishing scam that tricked users into signing a fake “Terms of Services” prompt, allowing the drainer to make off with their funds. A most audacious scheme, indeed!

And at the beginning of the month, the social network X announced its toughest anti-crypto scam measure to date, specifically designed to combat phishing scams. Yet, as the saying goes, “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”

As law enforcement grows more adept at tracing and freezing stolen funds, the scammers, ever resourceful, will no doubt devise more complex laundering routes. A never-ending game of cat and mouse, with new risks and signals for the astute trader to decipher.
