The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for putting fresh spins on classic comic book tales, but Jon Bernthal’s Punisher seems stuck repeating the same story. Although Bernthal is widely considered the best live-action version of Frank Castle, even after playing the role since 2016, the character’s full potential hasn’t been realized.
As a movie fan, I always thought Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, was a tough character to pull off. He’s not your typical hero – he is the violence, often acting like the villains and taking out anyone who gets in his way. It’s hard to really cheer him on, honestly. But when they delve into his backstory, and you understand the tragedy he’s been through, it starts to make sense why he became this extreme, brutal figure. It explains how someone like him could even fight alongside heroes who try to do things the right way, like Daredevil.
Punisher: One Last Kill Already Feels Very Familiar
The trailer for Punisher: One Last Kill shows Frank Castle battling inner turmoil – haunted by visions and voices. He then channels his pain into a violent fight against criminals who target families, mirroring the tragedy he himself endured.
The trailer features Castle seemingly accepting his violent side, even wearing the Punisher’s skull logo. While exciting, it feels like a repeat of the storyline Jon Bernthal had in the first two seasons of The Punisher on Netflix, and his brief appearance in season one of Daredevil: Born Again.
Frank Castle has a difficult time accepting his role as The Punisher. While he hesitates to fully embrace the violent persona, he doesn’t hold back when faced with conflict or someone he believes deserves punishment. Despite his actions, Frank never truly identifies with being The Punisher, often questioning the very principles his symbol represents – a sentiment echoed by groups like the AVTF seen in Daredevil: Born Again.
Frank Castle Might Just Be More Conflicted Than Matt Murdock’s Daredevil
Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, is often seen as one of Marvel’s most troubled heroes, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is suggesting Frank Castle, the Punisher, might actually be more conflicted. Frankly, Matt doesn’t struggle much with his urge to fight crime – he usually gives in to it.
Matt sometimes has trouble controlling his violent impulses towards enemies, but he usually manages to stay in check and seems mentally stable. Frank Castle, however, is constantly haunted by visions of those he’s killed and deeply struggles with the consequences of his actions.
As a longtime fan, I’ve always noticed that Castle is remarkably careful not to harm anyone who isn’t directly involved in the fighting. He doesn’t seem bothered by the lives of those he does take, or the impact on their families and friends. It’s not about morality for him; his real struggle comes from his own past losses and his inability to let go of the people he cared about.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has The Best Chance Of Exploring A New Punisher Story
Details are still scarce about the TV special, Punisher: One Last Kill, but we know the character will quickly reappear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The trailer for that movie suggests Frank Castle will fully embrace his violent role as the Punisher, even if it means confronting and shooting at popular heroes like Spider-Man when they try to stop him.
This suggests Frank Castle has processed his grief and accepted his role as the Punisher, allowing him to pursue a new path more closely aligned with the character’s comic book origins. This shift will likely connect to the events in Punisher: One Last Kill, preparing Frank for his next journey.
