For fans of Star Trek, a significant chapter has come to a close. While new seasons of current Star Trek shows are still planned, there won’t be any further additions to the franchise beyond those already announced.
The show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been canceled after two seasons. Filming recently finished on Season 2, which will be the show’s last. While fans started a petition hoping Paramount+ would change its mind, it’s now confirmed that the cancellation will stand.
The Athena and Enterprise Sets Are Being Demolished
According to TrekCentral, the sets used for Starfleet Academy are being dismantled, as evidenced by recent photos online. Some of the set pieces will even be auctioned off starting April 10th. This strongly suggests the show won’t be renewed for a third season. The sets were the largest ever constructed for a Star Trek series, and Paramount wouldn’t begin taking them down so quickly if they were still considering another season.
News has surfaced that the sets for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are being dismantled. While the show was renewed for two more seasons, ending with Season 5, many fans held out hope for a follow-up series called Star Trek: Year One. The destruction of the sets now makes that continuation extremely unlikely.
No Star Trek Shows Are Currently in Production
While there could still be three more seasons of Star Trek shows eventually, the future of the franchise is currently uncertain. For the first time in nearly ten years, no Star Trek series is actively being filmed, as both Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds have completed shooting their next seasons. No new shows have been officially approved yet.
Alex Kurtzman spearheaded a major expansion of the Star Trek universe in 2018 with a five-year deal, which was later extended to 2026. Now, as that deal ends this year, it’s uncertain whether Kurtzman will renew it or if Paramount will choose a new leader for the franchise. Paramount could approve another Star Trek film or series, potentially with Kurtzman still in charge, or with a different creative team. Alternatively, they might decide to pause Star Trek development for the time being.
