The long-awaited revival of The X-Files is gaining momentum. After several years in development with Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, a pilot episode is now set to begin filming. This new version of the classic series will feature Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as its leads, and creator Chris Carter won’t be involved. While there’s a possibility that original characters could reappear, nothing is confirmed at this time.

Gillian Anderson, known for her role in The X-Files, has mentioned discussions with Ryan Coogler about potentially reprising her character, Dana Scully. Now, her former co-star David Duchovny, who played Fox Mulder in two films and 194 television episodes, has also commented on the possibility. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Duchovny confirmed there have been preliminary conversations, but stated, “There’s nothing concrete at this point.” He also suggested a return isn’t necessarily a certainty.

Although David Duchovny playfully suggested he might reprise his role as Mulder, it’s been over eight years since his last appearance as the character. He confirmed to the publication that he hasn’t seen the script for the new series’ first episode, but he has talked with the show’s creator, Ryan Coogler. Duchovny admitted he doesn’t know what the new show is about or even if Mulder is part of it. This has led fans to speculate whether he’s deliberately being secretive about a possible return, or if the show takes place in a different reality, but his intentions remain unclear.

Duchovny offered some thoughts on a potential Hulu revival, wishing the team well but emphasizing the importance of strong writers. He pointed to the success of the original series’ writing team, specifically mentioning Vince Gilligan, the Morgan brothers, and Howard Gordon, as key to making the new show work.

We had a very creative team that came up with a lot of potential movie ideas – around 20 to 25. I don’t want to downplay shows like The Pitt, it’s excellent. But The X-Files essentially presented a new movie concept each week. I’m hoping Ryan doesn’t need to create so many episodes – maybe 10 to 12 will be enough. And most importantly, I hope he has a strong writing team, because that’s what will really make the show successful.

Currently, we know Ryan Coogler will write and direct the pilot episode of the X-Files revival, and Jennifer Yale will be the showrunner. Coogler recently won an Oscar for his screenplay for Black Panther, and Yale has worked on several successful TV series, including Legion, Outlander, and the Apple TV+ show Your Friends & Neighbors. While they’re a strong start to the writing team, as David Duchovny points out, they’ll need compelling storylines to sustain the show, particularly if it continues without one of the original stars.
