A recent report suggests fans may have to wait a long time for The Last of Us 3. It likely won’t be released on the PlayStation 5, and even a release on the PS6 isn’t guaranteed. If it does come to the PS6, it probably won’t be until late in the console’s lifecycle – assuming this report is accurate.
A new source named Alir, who has recently gained credibility after accurately leaking information about PlayStation, claims that Naughty Dog is currently developing two games: a new intellectual property called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and a new Uncharted title. The report states there are no plans for The Last of Us 3 at this time. If this is true, and considering the other projects underway, a third Last of Us game likely wouldn’t be in development for a long time.
The Last of Us 3’s Potential Release Date
The upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, isn’t expected to be released until at least 2027. If it does come out then, it will have been seven years since Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II in 2020. Developing new games is taking more time these days, and Naughty Dog also spent time working on a The Last of Us multiplayer game that was nearly complete but ultimately cancelled in 2023.
Let’s be optimistic and assume Naughty Dog releases its next three games about four years apart. Even with that generous timeline, and if The Last of Us 3 comes after the next Uncharted game, we’re still looking at a 2035 release date. That’s a best-case scenario, and fans would still have to wait a full 15 years for the third Last of Us game. While a long wait, it’s unfortunately becoming predictable.
Keep in mind that this information is based on rumors and isn’t confirmed. Fans hoping for another Uncharted game would be happy if these rumors turn out to be false, and The Last of Us 3 is released after Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Otherwise, we might be waiting a very long time for the next Last of Us installment.
