Lots of websites sell video games online, and most gamers know Steam. But GOG, originally called Good Old Games and around since 2008, stands out for a different reason. It’s not just about finding cheap games; GOG is dedicated to preserving classic video games. As I’ve written about before, especially for ComicBook, this preservation is incredibly important, and GOG is doing vital work to make sure these games aren’t lost as technology changes.
The website came about because of changes in Eastern Europe, like the end of Communism, and the growing success of CD Projekt, the company behind the popular The Witcher games. CD Projekt started in Poland to fight software piracy. They took apart existing games – legally, with the right permissions – to create versions that would appeal to Polish gamers. This early success allowed them to develop their own games and, in 2008, launch Good Old Games (GOG). GOG’s aim was to offer legitimate, updated versions of classic games, effectively competing with piracy, and they’ve been doing that ever since. This has been hugely beneficial for preserving many beloved older video games.
GOG Is All About Saving Classic Games

GOG’s Preservation Program is the company’s way of keeping classic games playable on today’s computers. They carefully choose older games and update them to work on modern PCs, which is a complex and costly process because they do everything legally. So far, the program has preserved 281 games – averaging a 4.2 out of 5 star rating – and added 1,519 improvements. The goal is to ensure these beloved titles remain accessible, even if the original developers no longer support them, offering a DRM-free experience with dedicated support so players can enjoy the games that hold special memories.
Reviving older games for PC isn’t straightforward. It involves overcoming technical challenges like outdated technology and missing original files, as well as legal issues like expired licenses. GOG’s Preservation Program relies on community support – through contributions and a ‘Dreamlist’ feature – to fund and identify games worth saving. A great example is the original Resident Evil game, first released for PlayStation in 1996. Despite its popularity, it wasn’t available digitally from 2000 to 2023. However, in 2024, GOG brought the classic survival horror series back by re-releasing Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 on its platform.
GOG didn’t just make the original Resident Evil games work on newer Windows computers; they actually improved them with better graphics settings, faster performance on AMD graphics cards, support for game controllers you can plug in and out while playing, and cloud saves. Since starting their Preservation Program, players have requested that GOG preserve over 20,000 games! Keeping that many older titles playable on modern systems is a huge undertaking, requiring significant effort, time, and money. But GOG is committed to the project, and they’ve already released updated versions of games like Alpha Protocol, Breath of Fire IV, and Dino Crisis, with more to come.
GOG Saves Games for Future Generations

It’s vital to preserve video games, not just as entertainment, but as an important art form that has impacted many of our lives. GOG recognizes this and is working to save classic games. You can directly contribute to their Preservation Program or support their efforts by purchasing preserved games on their website. With hundreds of affordable titles available, you can rediscover beloved games from the past and help ensure these experiences aren’t lost forever!
