Isekai Series Will Strike A.I. Anime Scenes Following Fan Backlash

Artificial intelligence is facing increasing scrutiny as it becomes more prevalent in entertainment and other fields. The anime industry is no exception, and recently, a leading studio behind the popular “Ascendance of a Bookworm” series has had to rethink its use of AI. After fans reacted negatively to the discovery that Wit Studio had used AI in the production of the anime, the studio is now working to address viewer concerns.

Wit Studio recently announced they used artificial intelligence (A.I.) to help create some of the background art for the opening sequence of their new anime, Ascendance of a Bookworm. They quickly responded to fan concerns, stating that they used A.I. to generate materials for a portion of the first episode’s opening. To address these concerns, Wit Studio will redraw the background art for that specific scene and replace the opening sequence with the updated version starting with episode 2.

The A.I. of a Bookworm

Wit released a statement explaining that while they keep up with new video production technologies like generative AI, they generally don’t allow its use in their work. They admitted that AI was mistakenly included in a recent project due to failures in their internal checks and quality control, and they take full responsibility. Wit sincerely apologized to fans, the original creator of the work, and everyone involved.

So far, we haven’t found any AI-generated images used in this project, except for this one instance. We also want to clarify that NAM HAI ART, the company responsible for the art direction and backgrounds, had no part in this. We’re taking this seriously and will update our production guidelines and processes to prevent similar issues in the future. We appreciate your understanding.

If you’re not familiar with the popular fantasy genre known as isekai, Ascendance of a Bookworm started as a light novel series by Miya Kazuki back in 2013. Now in its fourth season, the anime is being produced by Wit Studio, taking over from Ajiado. The story centers on Urano Motosu, who dies and is reborn hoping to spend her afterlife surrounded by books. However, her wish comes true in a surprisingly difficult and ironic way.
