Grogu’s height isn’t the only thing that’s short in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the new Star Wars film, the first since The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019. Though many details are still secret, we know Din Djarin and Grogu will be teaming up with the New Republic to fight what’s left of the Empire and various criminal groups. The movie will also introduce Sigourney Weaver as New Republic Colonel Ward, and feature Jeremy Allen White (from The Bear) as the voice of Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son.
At two hours and twelve minutes, the runtime for The Mandalorian and Grogu is the shortest a Star Wars movie has been since the animated film The Clone Wars (one hour and 38 minutes) came out in 2008. It’s also shorter than recent Star Wars films like The Force Awakens (two hours and 18 minutes), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (two hours and 13 minutes), The Last Jedi (two hours and 32 minutes), Solo: A Star Wars Story (two hours and 15 minutes), and The Rise of Skywalker (two hours and 21 minutes).
| Star Wars Movie | Runtime |
|---|---|
| The Clone Wars (2008) | 1 Hour & 38 Minutes |
| The Force Awakens (2015) | 2 Hours & 18 Minutes |
| Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) | 2 Hours & 13 Minutes |
| The Last Jedi (2017) | 2 Hours & 32 Minutes |
| Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) | 2 Hours & 15 Minutes |
| The Rise of Skywalker (2019) | 2 Hours & 21 Minutes |
| The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) | 2 Hours & 12 Minutes |
Although The Mandalorian and Grogu is the shortest Star Wars film Disney has released since buying Lucasfilm in 2012, the difference in length isn’t huge. It’s only a minute shorter than Rogue One, three minutes shorter than Solo, five minutes shorter than The Force Awakens, and nine minutes shorter than The Rise of Skywalker. The biggest difference is 20 minutes compared to The Last Jedi, but that film was already the longest in the entire franchise.
For years, Din and Grogu’s adventures have unfolded in the Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian, so a big question surrounding their upcoming movie is whether it will feel like a true cinematic event, and not just a longer version of a TV episode. The movie’s length is similar to other Star Wars films, which is encouraging, but we won’t know for sure if it delivers a proper movie experience until The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters.
Considering the film started as a TV show, its relatively short length – the shortest since The Clone Wars – makes sense. The 2008 animated movie also began as a TV project, intended as the first episode of a new Cartoon Network series. The story of The Mandalorian and Grogu actually connects to The Clone Wars film, which featured a young Rotta the Hutt as a key character. However, unlike that earlier film which aimed to launch a series, this new Star Wars movie continues the story that began with season one of The Mandalorian on Disney+ in 2019.
Trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu show that the bounty hunter Embo, a character from the Clone Wars TV series, will appear in the movie. Though he wasn’t in the animated film, Embo joins Din, Grogu, Colonel Ward, Rotta the Hutt, Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, the Hutt Twins, and several Imperial warlords in the two-hour and twelve-minute film.
The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theaters on May 22, 2026.
