Super Mario Galaxy Hits Box Office Milestone That Multiple Harry Potter Movies Couldn’t, In Under 2 Weeks

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has rocketed past an impressive box office milestone.

Illumination’s follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered on April 1st, just like the first film, releasing mid-week before the Easter holiday. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back many of the original voice actors, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Joining them are new cast members like Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Glen Powell as Fox McCloud.

According to Deadline, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to earn between $69 and $70 million this weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to around $308 to $309 million. This will make it the first film released in 2023 to reach $300 million domestically, and only the 116th movie ever to achieve that milestone.

This weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is quickly becoming one of the highest-grossing films domestically of all time. It’s already surpassed the lifetime earnings of several major blockbusters, including The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 ($293.1 million), Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back ($292.7 million), Man of Steel ($291 million), Gravity ($274.1 million), and multiple Harry Potter films like Chamber of Secrets ($262 million), Prisoner of Azkaban ($249.5 million), Goblet of Fire ($290 million), Order of the Phoenix ($292 million), and Deathly Hallows: Part 1 ($296 million).
