The X-Files Reboot Gets Update as David Duchovny Addresses Return Talks

The series is being revived, with Ryan Coogler of ‘Creed’ writing the new version. However, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny haven’t been confirmed to return as of yet.

Despite the original actors being open to coming back, the new season will introduce two fresh lead characters. David Duchovny has revealed he and Ryan Coogler have talked about a possible return, though it’s not confirmed.

David Duchovny Might Return as Fox Mulder

The X-Files, a groundbreaking sci-fi show, changed television with its mix of standalone episodes and overarching mysteries. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson starred as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. Duchovny left after seven seasons but returned for occasional appearances, eventually becoming a full-time cast member again in the show’s two revival seasons, now known as seasons 10 and 11.

David Duchovny said he hasn’t seen the script for the new series, even though his co-star Gillian Anderson did. He’s talked to creator Chris Carter and has a basic understanding of the plot, but hasn’t actually read it himself.

Duchovny admitted there have been discussions about him returning as Mulder, but stated that nothing is definite. He explained he’s unsure about the current state of the show or whether his character even exists within it, making it difficult to comment on any potential return.

He did offer them his best wishes, saying he’s always believed the show had a lot of potential and that its success ultimately depends on the quality of its writing team.

Reflecting on the show’s success, he explained they had an incredibly talented writing team, including Vince Gilligan and the Morgan brothers. He said the writers’ room was full of creative minds, consistently coming up with enough ideas for 20 to 25 films. He didn’t want to diminish the quality of shows like The Pitt, acknowledging it was excellent, but emphasized that The X-Files felt like a feature film every week.

He added that he hopes Ryan doesn’t end up having to film a full 25 episodes, ideally around 10 to 12. He also stressed that good writers are essential for the show’s success.

Hulu Greenlit The X-Files Reboot Pilot

As a huge fan, I’m really excited to hear that both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have spoken with Ryan Coogler about the revival! It doesn’t guarantee Mulder and Scully will be back, but it definitely tells me Coogler is serious about respecting the original series and building something great. For now, Hulu’s just ordered the pilot episode, which is a fantastic first step!

A new version of the show is coming soon, starring Himesh Patel as one of the leads. While details are scarce, both he and the other lead will play entirely new characters. They’ll portray two highly skilled FBI agents with very different backgrounds who develop a surprising connection when they’re tasked with reopening a forgotten division that investigates strange and unexplainable events.

She discussed the possibility of a reboot and shared that she’d read the script for the first episode. She told Dory Jackson that Ryan Coogler is very talented and that the script was excellent, and they’ve had initial talks about her character, Scully, potentially being involved.

The X-Files reboot doesn’t have a full series order or release date.
