5 Great 1990s Animated Movies Not Enough People Remember

The 1990s were a fantastic time for movies, and animation played a huge role. Before computer-generated effects became common, animation was the best way to create visually consistent fantasy worlds. Even with today’s advanced technology, many animated films from the 90s are still considered classics and are enjoyed by fans worldwide. The decade also produced many memorable animated TV shows that people still love. However, some of the best animated works from that era haven’t received the recognition they deserve.

The 1990s produced a lot of fantastic animated films that are still enjoyable today, but some great ones have faded from memory. While Disney films like The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast were huge hits, other worthy animated movies were often overlooked. These hidden gems remain excellent to watch, even though they didn’t get as much attention when they first came out.

5) The Pagemaster (1994)

While not a classic, The Pagemaster is a charming and overlooked fantasy film. With Macaulay Culkin, Christopher Lloyd, and voice talents like Patrick Stewart, Leonard Nimoy, and Whoopi Goldberg, the movie blends live-action with animation. It’s a fun adventure, but it’s sadly become largely forgotten from the animated films of the 1990s.

4) Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)

Besides Disney classics, few animated movies from the 1990s evoke as much nostalgia as the Scooby-Doo films. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is particularly memorable, not only as one of the best animated Scooby-Doo adventures, but as one of the strongest stories in the whole series. The movie follows Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang as they investigate a spooky, haunted estate on an island, making it one of the most genuinely frightening Scooby-Doo films ever made. Many remember it as a fantastic, though surprisingly scary, piece of animation, and like other great movies from the decade, it doesn’t get the recognition it truly deserves.

3) FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992)

Many people who grew up in the 80s and 90s remember the animated movie FernGully: The Last Rainforest, but it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. This colorful musical fantasy is about a rainforest in Australia where fairies live and fight to save their home from loggers and a dangerous villain named Hexxus. With a strong environmental message and a fantastic voice cast – including Tim Curry, Robin Williams, and Christian Slater – FernGully stands out as one of the best animated films of the 90s that wasn’t made by Disney. It’s a shame that it isn’t more well-known today.

2) Quest for Camelot (1998)

If you’re a fan of ’90s fantasy, don’t overlook Quest for Camelot. It’s surprising how many people have forgotten this gem! The movie boasts an incredible voice cast – featuring stars like Cary Elwes, Gary Oldman, Eric Idle, and Pierce Brosnan – and tells the story of a young woman determined to become a knight. She embarks on a quest to recover King Arthur’s sword, Excalibur, and avenge her father’s death. While it uses familiar fantasy elements and feels a lot like a Disney film, Quest for Camelot somehow hasn’t stuck with many viewers.

1) Balto (1995)

Many great movies from the 1990s have been overlooked, and Balto is a prime example. Based on the true story of a wolfdog who bravely delivered medicine to children during a diphtheria outbreak in 1925, the film didn’t do well in theaters, likely because it came out around the same time as the hugely popular Toy Story. Despite being a beautifully animated and emotionally resonant movie with a true story at its heart, Balto has unfortunately faded from public memory over the years.
