The popular Gundam series is continuing its tradition of releasing new stories about its iconic robots. This year, the second part of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash will be available in North America, following its release in Japan in early 2026 as Sorcery of Nymph. The team behind a well-known anime adaptation has recently suggested a possible return to the franchise. While Gundam often revisits familiar storylines, fans may be excited to hear that a sequel set in a completely new universe is also a possibility.
Although it included mechs, the anime series Gundam GQuuuuuuX stood out as something different within the popular Gundam franchise. The show, which only had one season and was created by Hideaki Anno (known for Evangelion), presented an alternate take on the original Gundam story – what if Char had been the first to find the Gundam? Recently, during an event celebrating the Blu-Ray and DVD release, director Kazuya Tsurumaki and producer Yugi Sugitani revealed the reason why no main characters died during the twelve episodes. They intentionally kept everyone alive to allow for a potential sequel. They specifically mentioned that they’d like to explore the backstory of supporting character Shuji if the show is renewed.
Gundam’s Sequel Bait

The first season of this anime, titled GQuuuuuuX, imagined a reality where the Principality of Zeon won the war against the Earth Federation, with Char using the Gundam to secure victory. However, this win didn’t lead to universal destruction. Instead, the story follows Amate Yuzuriha as she discovers her own Gundam and gets caught up in a secret mech competition. While Char isn’t a central character in Amate’s story, his influence and the mysteries of Zeon are explored throughout the season. Although Bandai Namco Filmworks hasn’t announced a second season yet, the Gundam franchise is known for revisiting popular storylines.
I’m really excited about Hathaway’s Flash! It feels like a fantastic return to the original Gundam universe, and it’s awesome to see Noa Hathaway stepping into the roles made famous by Char and Amuro. It’s planned as a trilogy of films, and like so many other Gundam stories, it centers on the conflict between Zeon and Earth. Interestingly, while it’s not directly part of the original timeline, it’s actually a sequel to a much-loved series! And speaking of success, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom still holds the record for the highest-grossing Gundam movie, continuing the story fans loved. It’s great to see these universes getting attention because honestly, there are so many fantastic anime stories out there that deserve to be continued!
