Okay, so the first Super Mario Galaxy Movie wasn’t quite as amazing as the first one, but I really think a third film could be incredible if they brought in some of the stranger characters from the games. Seriously, the Mario universe is packed with weird and wonderful creatures after all these years of games! And there are two in particular that fans—including me—are really hoping to see in the next Super Mario Bros. Movie. They’re definitely some of the most requested!
While The Super Mario Bros. Movie played it safe, a potential Super Mario Galaxy Movie would explore the franchise’s deeper history and characters. This sequel would include many lesser-known elements and even change established relationships, like that of Rosalina and Peach. However, these niche references and changes contributed to the sequel receiving poorer reviews than the first film, and the next installment needs to address this.
Wario & Waluigi Need To Be In The Third Mario Movie

To improve upon the success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the next film should include Wario and Waluigi. These rivals of Mario and Luigi are best known from games like Mario Party, Mario Kart, and Mario Tennis, where they’re portrayed as mischievous and selfish characters – not quite the heroes that Mario and Luigi are. This slightly rougher and more playful personality is a big reason why Wario and Waluigi are so popular with fans, who have been eagerly hoping to see them play larger roles in major Mario adventures.
Fans were disappointed when Wario and Waluigi weren’t included in the first Mario movie, and they didn’t appear in the sequel either. Now, with the success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there’s renewed hope they might finally make an appearance in a third film, which seems likely to happen.
Super Mario Galaxy is a massive and beloved Mario game, and now that it’s been incorporated into a movie, it will be tough for a third film to live up to the success of the second. To build excitement for a potential sequel, bringing in Wario and Waluigi would be a smart move. These characters are incredibly popular and well-known, even among people who don’t play Mario games, and would allow the filmmakers to cast famous actors in prominent roles.
The inclusion of Wario and Waluigi is interesting because it suggests the next Mario movie won’t be based on a specific video game. The first film told the classic Mario story, and the second was promoted as a direct adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy. Since Wario and Waluigi aren’t typically the main villains in Mario games, a third movie would likely need an original storyline. This could be a good thing, as many felt The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lacked a strong narrative.
Wario’s Inclusion Could Allow The Mario Movies To Avoid Sonic’s Biggest Problem

It’s natural to compare The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, and with a second Mario film out, those comparisons are happening again. Fans are starting to get frustrated that Dr. Robotnik has been the villain in all three Sonic movies, and it looks like he’ll be back for a fourth. Many believe the Sonic series has a lot of great villains to choose from, and using Robotnik repeatedly feels like a missed opportunity.
The Mario series has a wide range of villains, so the films shouldn’t constantly depend on Bowser and his army. While Bowser was the main villain in the first movie and featured again in the second with Bowser Jr., the third film needs to explore other antagonists. Bowser is often portrayed as a more complex character, even a hero, in many Mario games like Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Super Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, and the movies should reflect that breadth.
For a third Super Mario Bros. Movie, Wario and Waluigi would be ideal villains, offering a fresh dynamic compared to Bowser and Bowser Jr. Unlike the Koopas, who often attack from the outside, Wario and Waluigi would likely cause trouble within the Mushroom Kingdom. While characters like Fawful and Count Blek could also be great antagonists, Wario and Waluigi are the strongest choice for the next film.
