Starfield Has a Serious Crashing Issue on PS5, PS5 Pro

Man, Starfield keeps crashing on my PS5 and the PS5 Pro, and it’s super frustrating! Nobody seems to know what’s causing it yet, which makes it even worse. I just want to play!

Just to clarify, this problem doesn’t seem to be happening to everyone. During our testing for the Starfield PS5 review, we didn’t run into any major issues ourselves.

More and more players are reporting crashes on Reddit as the game enters its first weekend on PlayStation consoles.

It’s concerning because we’re now running into these crashes ourselves. This player started the game on Friday and repeatedly crashed while exploring one of the main cities.

Naturally, we ran some tests, and as far as we can tell, the crashing is at least influenced by the graphics settings that you’re using. On PS5 Pro, we went through every mode — Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance — with the frame rate uncapped, and we very quickly hit crashes across all of them.

The game only ran smoothly in the city when we limited the frame rate to 60 frames per second. But when we explored the wilderness, it kept crashing.

We fixed the issue by turning off PSSR 2, the PS5 Pro’s AI upscaling feature, in the display settings. Since then, we haven’t experienced any crashes while playing Starfield for several hours.

We’ve noticed this issue ourselves, but it seems to be widespread. People on Reddit have tried many different solutions, but none of them have been successful so far.

Of course, turning off PSSR 2 doesn’t fix the crashes that happen when playing the sci-fi RPG on a standard system.

In short, there’s something very wrong with Starfield right now.

Even the experts at Digital Foundry have been experiencing crashes while playing Starfield. In their technical review, they noted that the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PS5 Pro crashed fairly often during testing – something they didn’t see on the Xbox Series X/S. These crashes completely freeze the game, forcing players to restart their console. Digital Foundry encountered this problem in various settings and configurations, meaning there’s no clear fix or way to prevent it.

Honestly, I’m really hoping Bethesda fixes the issues with Starfield quickly. It came out on PS5 on April 7th, and it’s been a while now with no updates at all, which is a bit frustrating!

Bethesda is known for releasing video games with a lot of bugs, and it’s incredibly frustrating that Starfield, after finally being released on PS5 almost three years after its initial launch, is still plagued by crashes.
