The Boys: 5 Characters Most Likely To Defeat Homelander After Season 5, Episodes 1 & 2

Season 5 of The Boys will be the show’s last, and it will finally determine what happens to the character Homelander. While the trailer suggests he might die – referencing a scene from the original comics – the show probably won’t follow the comic book storyline exactly. Killing Homelander off with Black Noir would feel underwhelming after the big reveal at the end of Season 3, and given how often the show deviates from the comics, another character is more likely to be the one to defeat him. Warning: Spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of The Boys Season 5.

As a huge fan of The Boys, it’s become pretty clear that a lot of the strongest heroes have legitimate reasons to take down Homelander, especially as we move into the final season. He’s really spiraling in the latest episodes, and the way Season 4 ended has definitely made stopping him the main goal. Let’s be real, taking him out won’t be easy – he’s incredibly powerful. It’s going to take a team effort, I think. But whether Antony Starr’s character goes down in a one-on-one fight or during a massive showdown with several opponents, there are a few key players who seem most likely to be involved in bringing him down.

5) Soldier Boy

Soldier Boy is one of the few heroes powerful enough to challenge Homelander, and now he has a personal reason to fight him. In the first two episodes of The Boys Season 5, Homelander sends Soldier Boy after Butcher, unknowingly putting him in the path of the supe virus. Butcher convinces Soldier Boy that Homelander is manipulating him, which could lead to a revenge mission. This sets the stage for another showdown between the two, although many viewers might find it anticlimactic if Soldier Boy were to defeat Homelander, as the villain has bigger conflicts with more important characters.

4) Starlight

While Starlight probably couldn’t win a direct fight against Homelander, she’s skilled at undermining him and is leading the effort to oppose his rule. She’ll be crucial in bringing him down, even if she doesn’t deliver the final blow. If a team is needed, she’s a valuable fighter, as shown in the Season 5 premiere where she briefly disabled Homelander with her powers. This season, she’s also more ready to risk her own life, making her a serious threat.

3) Marie Moreau

Both The Boys and Gen V suggest Marie Moreau could be the one to finally stop Homelander, thanks to her ability to control blood – a power that could potentially disable or even kill him. Being the other survivor of the Odessa incident, it feels likely she’ll play a role in his defeat. While she’s become more powerful in Gen V Season 2, it’s still uncertain if she can actually beat him, or even if she should. Although it would be great to see her become that powerful, her connection to the main story of The Boys feels a bit separate. Right now, if she defeated Homelander on her own, it wouldn’t feel very satisfying. She might end up being part of a larger solution, similar to how Starlight contributed.

2) Ryan Butcher

Season 5 of The Boys is setting up Homelander’s son, Ryan, as a major threat to his father. Ryan possesses the same powerful abilities as Homelander, but he’s less seasoned and more empathetic. He’s currently missing, suggesting he’ll return as a more developed character. Given what happened in Season 4, Ryan has strong motivations to challenge Homelander. While it seems unlikely he could defeat Homelander alone, it’s not out of the question – especially if Butcher, despite their recent conflict, is in danger. Their complicated relationship could be the key to Ryan finally confronting his father.

1) Billy Butcher

After the first two episodes of The Boys Season 5, Billy Butcher still appears to be the most likely character to defeat Homelander. Their rivalry is central to the show, and the season needs to resolve it. Butcher is determined to take down Homelander with his supe virus, and now has powers himself, making a confrontation between them especially exciting. While the virus didn’t kill Soldier Boy, Butcher is resourceful and if anyone can figure out a way to permanently stop Homelander, it’s him.
