Will there be a season 4 of The Capture?

*Warning – contains full spoilers for all six episodes of The Capture season 3.*

The third and final season of The Capture has concluded with the release of its last episode on BBC iPlayer. It wraps up Rachel Carey’s fight against E Squadron and her efforts to uncover the truth behind Isaac Turner’s death.

The episode also brought the storylines of several key characters to a close, and was full of unexpected surprises right until the very end.

Will there be a fourth season of The Capture, and what might it hold for Rachel Carey? If so, when can we expect to see it?

Will there be The Capture season 4?

It’s currently unclear if The Capture will return for a fourth season. While the show’s creator, Ben Chanan, initially planned for season three to be the finale, he later wasn’t so sure about ending the series there.

When talking about the fate of Ron Perlman’s character, Frank Napier, he explained that he approached writing the series as if it would be the final one. He admitted he wasn’t sure if that would actually be the case – ‘never say never’ – but he believes it’s best to treat each series as a standalone story, rather than prolonging it just to keep characters around.

He added that actors generally aren’t upset about their characters dying, especially if the show is ending anyway. However, it’s important to give them a meaningful and satisfying exit for their character.

The third season of The Capture feels like a natural ending point for the story, though it concludes on a rather bleak note. While Rachel Carey achieved the position of Commander of Counter Terror, she did so by sacrificing her principles and integrity, ultimately meaning E Squadron won.

They continued to exploit Correction, confident she couldn’t expose them or take any action to stop it.

One part of the story remained unresolved: Rachel Carey briefly saw the deceased Gemma Garland in the background of a recent selfie, but Gemma vanished from the photo almost immediately.

It’s currently unclear if what happened was a real technological event or just a figment of Rachel’s imagination. However, it introduces an interesting possibility that could be explored further in a future season.

We’ll simply have to wait and see if The Capture gets another season.

When would a potential The Capture season 4 be released?

Don’t expect a fourth season of The Capture anytime soon. There were significant gaps between each season – three years between the first and second, and then four years between the second and third.

In 2023, Ben Chanan addressed the reasons for the show’s delayed return when questioned about a potential third season.

He used to say that the rapid development of deepfakes, fake news, and artificial intelligence was concerning. He felt the show The Capture really explored how frightening things could become in this evolving landscape.

It feels like things have moved so quickly between the two series that I sometimes need to pause and see how the latest developments are being understood, or even just brace myself for what might happen next.

This isn’t about predicting the future; it’s about what’s happening right now. I feel like I need to pause, see how things develop in the news and around the world, and then decide how to react.

If the show gets a fourth season, it looks like Chanan will probably have to wait for current events to develop and new tech-related problems to surface before it can happen.

We’re currently estimating a release sometime around 2029 or 2030, but it’s important to remember that this is just an educated guess at this stage.

We’ll share any updates about the future of The Capture as soon as we have them.

Who would return to star in a potential The Capture season 4?

A fourth season of The Capture would likely feature a much smaller returning cast. Many of the main characters died during the latest six episodes.

As a big fan of the show, I was genuinely shocked to see some key players get killed off! We lost Frank Napier, played by Ron Perlman, and Gemma Garland, portrayed by Lia Williams. And it was a real gut punch to see Isaac Turner, who Paapa Essiedu brought to life so brilliantly in season two, also meet his end. It definitely changed things up!

Season 3 also saw the deaths of key characters, including Noah Pierson, played by Killian Scott, and James Whitlock, played by Joe Dempsie.

We fully anticipate Holliday Grainger returning as Rachel Carey, and it’s likely that Ben Miles, Ginny Holder, Nigel Lindsay, Tessa Wong, Indira Varma, and Daisy Waterstone will reprise their roles as well.

If The Capture gets another season, here are some characters who might come back.

  • Holliday Grainger as Acting Commander Rachel Carey
  • Ben Miles as Danny Hart
  • Ginny Holder as DI Nadia Latif
  • Nigel Lindsay as DSU Tom Kendricks
  • Hugh Quarshie as Commissioner Cameron Yates
  • Andrew Buchan as Deputy Commissioner Julian Talbot
  • Indira Varma as Khadija Khan
  • Tessa Wong as DC Chloe Tan
  • Daisy Waterstone as Abigail Carey
  • Andy Nyman as Rowan Gill
  • Linus Roache as Colonel Figgis
  • Amanda Drew as Angela Stilon
  • Adrian Rawlins as Lord Frederickson
