Well-known director Steven Soderbergh recently discussed his abandoned Star Wars project, ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo,’ which he was working on with actor Adam Driver.
The movie would have continued the story of Kylo Ren, the conflicted son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, after the events of the 2019 film, The Rise of Skywalker, which proved to be controversial among fans.
Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver collaborated before on the 2017 film Logan Lucky, a critically acclaimed heist comedy that unfortunately didn’t perform well at the box office.
I was really surprised to hear the actor talk about this! Apparently, people at Lucasfilm loved the idea of bringing Han Solo back, but Bob Iger and Alan Bergman at Disney shut it down. They just didn’t think there was a believable way to explain how he could have survived after what happened in the last movie.
In a recent interview with Variety, director Steven Soderbergh—known for films like Ocean’s Eleven and Erin Brockovich—shared that Adam Driver expressed regret over bringing him onto the ultimately unsuccessful project, apparently feeling he’d taken up the director’s time for nothing.

But the director had a more positive outlook on the film, despite it’s ultimate fate.
He believes that even creative efforts that don’t immediately pan out are valuable. He particularly enjoyed collaborating with Adam Driver, Rebecca Blunt, and Scott Burns on a recent project, acknowledging that not every creative endeavor results in a finished product.
I’m confident in the idea we developed – I believe it would have really resonated with people. Collaborating with talented individuals to tackle challenges is the best way to grow and improve. This whole process was a valuable learning experience that I’ll carry with me in all my future work.
Soderbergh finished by saying he wasn’t disappointed with how things turned out and was proud of everything the team accomplished while working on The Hunt for Ben Solo.
Despite winning an Academy Award for his work on the 2001 film Traffic, he doesn’t want to revisit the project. This came up after leadership changes at both Lucasfilm and Disney.
He told The Playlist this week that a potential reunion wasn’t going to happen. He explained that dwelling on it is pointless, and if it were meant to be, it would have already. He seems to be saying it’s time to move on.
Fans can soon see Star Wars back on the big screen! Next month, theaters will show The Mandalorian and Grogu, a continuation of the popular Disney+ show. Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver star in the film.
Ryan Gosling, known for his role in Project Hail Mary, will be back in a galaxy far, far away next year with a new Star Wars movie, Starfighter. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, who also directed Deadpool & Wolverine.
Star Wars films and shows are streaming on Disney+. Sign-up to Disney+ from £5.99 a month.
