Ryan Reynolds is a hugely popular actor, famous for starring in big hits like Deadpool and Free Guy. But he’s also been in some fantastic movies that didn’t get enough attention. With exciting new projects like Mayday and Avengers: Doomsday coming out in 2026, fans can now enjoy one of his lesser-known, but charming, family fantasy films on Netflix, which added it to its streaming library this April.
In 2024, Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski collaborated on the film IF, a live-action animated comedy that celebrates the power of imagination. After earning $190 million worldwide and receiving varied reactions from critics, the movie became available to stream on Netflix on April 9th. IF centers around Bea, played by Cailey Fleming, a girl going through a difficult time who can see forgotten imaginary friends. She teams up with her neighbor to help these friends reconnect with the children who created them, before they vanish forever.
Ryan Reynolds IF Divided Critics and Audiences
While not Ryan Reynolds’ worst-received film – that distinction belongs to R.I.P.D. which only garnered a 13% approval rating from critics – IF didn’t impress most reviewers. It received mixed reviews and a ‘Rotten’ score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics pointing to a confusing plot and uneven style. However, audiences clearly enjoyed it more, giving the film a ‘Fresh’ 85% rating, making it one of Reynolds’ ninth most popular movies with general viewers.
While not flawless, the 2024 film IF is a genuinely enjoyable and creative movie that appeals to more than just kids. It occasionally feels slow or confusing, and similar stories have been told before, but it’s still a heartwarming and imaginative experience for viewers of all ages. The movie excels at bringing a large cast of uniquely designed, animated imaginary friends to life, and it powerfully evokes feelings of nostalgia and emotional release, particularly for adults reflecting on lost childhood wonder and the challenges of adulthood. IF skillfully blends hilarious moments with genuinely touching scenes, making it a well-rounded and uplifting family adventure.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix added a lot of great content in April, and IF is the latest addition. So far this month, viewers have enjoyed films like Along Came Polly, the Madagascar series, several Mission: Impossible movies, Scream (2022), and the new shark thriller Thrash. More movies are coming soon, including Halloween Ends on April 13th, Him on April 19th, and Apex on April 24th.
