Bungie’s Marathon, first announced in 2023 and after some development delays to refine the game, has received a mixed reaction. While it hasn’t been a failure – reports show 1.2 million copies sold across all platforms since its release last month – it hasn’t reached the same level of success as Helldivers 2.
Despite its recent performance, this game had a very large budget – reportedly over $200 million, and possibly as high as $250 million. This figure, according to Forbes, doesn’t even include the ongoing costs of maintaining the game or adding new content. It’s unclear if post-launch additions like Ranked Mode and the Cryo Archive are factored into that initial cost.
The upcoming mid-season patch and new Implants will likely be considered new content, along with any additions like maps, characters, weapons, outfits, and other features.
With a significant budget, a peak of 88,337 players on Steam – and fewer than 30,000 in the last day – might seem like a failure. Considering Marathon costs $40 and reportedly sold 1.2 million copies, it’s likely not yet profitable. However, Sony might be focused on long-term success, building revenue from a small but dedicated group of committed players.
We’ll share more details in the next few months, so keep checking back. You can read our review of Marathon in the meantime here.
