A shooter based on the popular game StarCraft seems to be in development, and it might be further along than many people realize. Sources say Drew Murray, a former design director at the now-closed studio behind the canceled Perfect Dark reboot, is now working on the StarCraft project.
According to Murray’s LinkedIn profile, he joined Blizzard as an associate design director in January. Corden mentioned rumors that Murray is working on a StarCraft shooter, but admitted this isn’t confirmed. He also noted Murray’s experience at Insomniac Games, where he contributed to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and another unrevealed project, demonstrating a strong background in large-scale game development.
Rumors about this project began in September 2024 when Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Dan Hay, a former lead on the Far Cry series, was leading the development. At that time, the project was in its initial stages, and its current progress is unclear. Blizzard recently advertised for a Lead Designer specializing in innovative shooter gameplay. The job description specifies experience with Unreal Engine, which raises the possibility of collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, given their extensive expertise with the engine.
We’re not sure if this relates to the potential StarCraft shooter reportedly being developed by Nexon. We’ll have to wait and see, and we might find out at BlizzCon in September. Microsoft could also reveal something at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7th, though they might not want to overshadow the announcements for Gears of War: E-Day or Halo: Campaign Evolved. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
