Shonen Jump Cancels Its Fourth Major 2026 Series (& Fans Were Ready for the End)

Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump has ended another one of its manga series, marking the fourth cancellation this year. Fans largely anticipated this conclusion as the magazine moved into a new publishing quarter and prepared to launch three new titles in April. To make space for these new series, the magazine needed to conclude three existing ones.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for manga fans like me! First, we lost Gonron Egg and The Mage Next Door after just over 20 chapters each. Now, sadly, Matsuri Hatsubina’s Hero Girl and Demon Lord has also been cancelled. Honestly, a lot of us saw it coming – the main story wrapped up last week, so it wasn’t totally out of the blue, but it’s still disappointing to see another series end early.

Shonen Jump Cancels Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits After 21 Chapters

I was really excited when Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits first launched in Weekly Shonen Jump last November, but sadly it’s been cancelled after only six months and 21 chapters. Honestly, a lot of us saw it coming – it just didn’t seem to catch on like some of the other popular series in the magazine. It’s especially disappointing when you look at the Fall 2025 lineup; with Gonron Egg, The Mage Next Door, and now Hero Girl all getting the axe, it feels like a tough run for new series in Jump right now.

The series Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits didn’t heavily focus on a grand plot. Instead, it centered on the everyday experiences of the hero and demon lord as they adjusted to a more peaceful existence. However, the story revealed its ending in the second-to-last chapter, quickly resolving that the hero needed to stay with the demon lord to control his power. The final chapter then showed everyone happily returning to their normal lives.

What’s Happening to Shonen Jump in 2026?

This is the fourth series cancellation from Shonen Jump this year, following the recent end of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. While it’s the fifth series to conclude overall, cancellations are common for the magazine, and it’s actually performing better than it did last year. In 2025, thirteen series ended, ten of which were cancelled. With several other popular series planning their final arcs, we can expect even more endings in the near future.

Okay, so it looks like the recent wave of series cancellations is probably over – at least for now! The newer manga that started appearing in the magazine with a 2026 debut still have some time before they’re considered for cancellation. But that doesn’t mean things are totally safe! We’re already seeing some favorites wrap up, with Sakamoto Days, Blue Box, and Witch Watch all heading into their final storylines. Even Hima-Ten!, which has been doing really well, seems to be gearing up for its finale. It’s a bit sad, but definitely keep an eye out to see which series might be ending next – it’s always a little unpredictable!
