Taylor Sheridan’s newest show premiered on Paramount+ last month. Even after the first season ended, the show—a modern Western—is still attracting a lot of viewers on the streaming service.
The Madison is currently a popular show on Paramount+, ranking among the top 10 in many countries worldwide (according to FlixPatrol). In the United States, it’s consistently between the No. 3 and No. 4 spot, and it’s also performing well in places like Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell Lead the Cast
“The Madison” follows the Clyburn family as they move from New York City to Montana’s Madison River valley after experiencing a devastating loss. Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell star as Stacy and Preston Clyburn, the parents, and the cast also includes Beau Garrett, Patrick J. Adams, Elle Chapman, Amiah Miller, Alaina Pollack, Ben Schnetzer, Kevin Zegers, and Rebecca Spence.
Kevin Costner explained to Variety that the script felt incredibly personal. He said it was like Taylor Sheridan had been a silent observer in his own home. Costner shared that he’d spent time living in both Los Angeles and Colorado, choosing to move to Colorado at 26 to pursue a lifestyle he desired while still working in the entertainment industry.
He explained that reading the script made him realize this was the first time he’d be playing a character so close to his own personality, rather than a more exaggerated or completely different role. He felt the story focused on real, human connections and an inner journey, and he knew he was a good fit. The character had complexities he personally understood, and he was confident he could bring the right nuance to the role and the show, especially for the director, Michelle.
The Madison Season 1 Spans Six Episodes
The first season was released in two parts on Paramount+. The initial three episodes became available on March 21st, and the final three followed the next week. Importantly, Paramount+ had already renewed the show, titled The Madison, for a second season before the first season even began, so viewers knew there would be more to come.
The new series had a very strong start, becoming the most-watched premiere ever for a show created by Sheridan. It garnered eight million views globally in its first ten days. However, critical reviews were somewhat mixed, giving Season 1 of The Madison a 62% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers seemed to enjoy it more, with an audience score of 69%.
