Colman Domingo hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time, and his opening monologue was a hit. He even made a funny joke about the show Euphoria and its audience.
The Emmy-winning actor discussed his long career, explaining that people often have trouble remembering where they’ve seen him before. He joked that this might be because he’s been in so many different shows, including Fear the Walking Dead, iCarly, and Euphoria.
Domingo playfully noted he can usually tell what shows people recognize him from, depending on who’s watching. He explained that different age groups and viewers tend to remember him for different roles, mentioning Fear the Walking Dead and Euphoria as examples. He joked that Euphoria fans are often young women under 20 or men over 30 who find the show unsettling.
After finishing his opening jokes, he explained his main goal for hosting Saturday Night Live: to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome, like they were guests in his own home. He started by giving a shout-out to the often-overlooked crew members who are essential to the show, and he even spoke directly to people in the audience during his opening monologue.
He gave clear direction to the production team throughout the show. He asked for music and lighting that would highlight the performers’ talents, and then focused on the camera angles, requesting closer, more artistic shots. He even considered how his own appearance looked on camera and asked for adjustments to the filming angle.
Domingo invited Saturday Night Live performer Jeremy Culhane onstage. He asked Culhane to look directly at the camera, but the moment became unintentionally funny when Culhane first looked at the wrong one. The crew quickly pointed him in the right direction, and his over-the-top expression shifted into an awkward, yet hilarious, shot.
During his opening remarks, the host engaged with the audience. He asked a woman in the crowd how she’d gotten tickets, and when she said she knew someone who worked on the show, he playfully responded with, “That’s hot.” He then pressed her to clarify if it was a cast member, and when she explained it was one of the show’s writers, he jokingly pretended to be disappointed, saying, “Don’t tell people that.”
Domingo finished his speech by walking back onstage and joking that he’d normally be asleep by that hour, but the show had to continue. He then said the best was yet to come as he left the stage.
