Since 1985, Studio Ghibli has been the most celebrated anime film studio, consistently creating movies known for their beautiful animation, compelling stories, and emotional depth. The studio is famous for its detailed, hand-drawn style, featuring vibrant landscapes, realistic motion, and expressive characters. Co-founder and director Hayao Miyazaki has been especially influential in building Ghibli’s reputation, with beloved films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle. Remarkably, even at 85 years old, he’s still actively working on new projects with no plans to retire.
As a huge Ghibli fan, I’m absolutely thrilled with how 2026 is shaping up! The studio started the year with some stunning new artwork from Miyazaki himself, and it’s been amazing. Last month, he surprised everyone with beautifully redrawn illustrations of his classic films for something called a Panorama Box. It’s a really cool technique where layers create a 3D effect – you’ll be able to see it at the Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse starting July 8th, 2026. Ghibli Park in Aichi Prefecture is just full of surprises! On top of this incredible new work from Miyazaki, they’ve also given us a sneak peek at a new collaboration with TOHO Cinemas. It’s a fantastic time to be a Ghibli enthusiast!
Studio Ghibli Reveals a New Campaign in Collaboration With TOHO Cinemas
TOHO Cinemas released a new promotional video showcasing fresh illustrations of beloved characters from Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Porco Rosso, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. The campaign also features Noriko Hidaka, the renowned Japanese voice actress famous for playing Satsuki in My Neighbor Totoro. The official campaign website offers more information, highlighting the idea that “Stories are always born in movie theaters.”
TOHO Cinemas is planning to open a new, state-of-the-art cinema in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, on June 11, 2026. This flagship location will feature cutting-edge technology like IMAX® Laser and a powerful new sound system. The cinema’s location was chosen with Ghibli Park – a popular destination for fans of Studio Ghibli – nearby.
The opening celebration will happen in two stages. First, we’ll be handing out posters and flyers to spread the word about the theater. Second, we’re temporarily redecorating the inside of the theater. The website shows what the theater will look like, including a large Totoro figure inspired by the film My Neighbor Totoro. Visitors will also find a giant mural featuring the famous line, “just a little while away,” in the lobby for a short time. We’re planning more events to celebrate the opening and will share those details soon.
