Despite the official statements from City Hall, New York City is chaotic in the new Daredevil: Born Again series. A special task force is aggressively arresting people, labeling anyone who tries to help others as a vigilante. This has overwhelmed Daredevil, forcing him to do more than ever, but he can’t handle everything on his own.
Before the end of the second season of Born Again, Jessica Jones will team up with Matt Murdock to help him in his fight. Daredevil really needs her skills to finally defeat the AVTF. But New York City has other issues that could benefit from a team effort, and Marvel Studios is planning to bring The Defenders back together for a full reunion in Season 3.
Several stars from the show, including Mike Colter, Finn Jones, and Krysten Ritter, have been seen filming season 3 (according to Variety). While fans are excited about the team reuniting, it’s important to consider why they’re getting back together. For the past nine years, there hasn’t been a villain strong enough to warrant bringing The Defenders back into action, but that could quickly change if any of the potential threats on this list emerge.
Villains The Defenders Could Face in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3
Kingpin

As a movie fan, I’ve always seen Wilson Fisk as this incredibly resilient villain – like a cockroach, honestly. No matter how badly you beat him, he always finds a way to bounce back and get what he wants, often in surprisingly clever ways. It’s gotten to the point where he actually managed to become mayor of New York by playing everyone! But things are really heating up for him now, and with Bullseye stirring things up, Fisk seems like he’s about to lose all restraint and really go for it.
It’s debatable whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs more of the Kingpin, but he’d be a fantastic villain for a future Defenders team-up. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist haven’t yet had a proper showdown with him, and that conflict would be exciting to watch. It might take all four heroes working together to finally defeat him.
The Hand

I remember when Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones first teamed up – it was awesome! They were all investigating this mysterious group called The Hand, which was basically spreading trouble everywhere. Daredevil and Iron Fist already knew about them and quickly filled the others in on just how dangerous they were. By the end of the series, they managed to take down The Hand, but honestly, we all knew it wouldn’t be gone for good. It felt like just a matter of time before they’d pop up again.
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day featured Spider-Man battling ninjas from the Hand. Although we don’t know what they’re up to yet, it’s clear they’ve come to New York with a purpose. The Defenders might be involved in stopping them, just like before.
Purple Man

Jessica Jones is teaming up with Daredevil against a common enemy, and it makes sense she’d return the favor. Kilgrave was a dangerous villain with the power to control minds, and he exploited Jessica Jones, causing her lasting trauma. Luckily, Jessica was able to defeat him and get her revenge in her own comic book series.
The huge popularity of David Tennant’s portrayal of the Purple Man might convince Marvel Studios to bring the character back and reimagine him for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character is a powerful force in the comics, having battled villains like Doctor Doom and Moon Knight, which suggests there’s a lot of potential for him in live-action adaptations.
Mister Fear

If the team behind Daredevil: Born Again wants to introduce a fresh villain for a potential Season 3, Mister Fear would be a great choice. In the comics, he’s a scientist who accidentally develops a fear gas, causing anyone exposed to it to experience terrifying hallucinations. He’s essentially Marvel’s version of the Scarecrow.
Cillian Murphy set a high bar with his performance as Dr. Jonathan Crane, but that doesn’t mean Mister Fear is finished. He could unleash his fear gas over New York City, forcing The Defenders to confront their deepest anxieties.
Mephisto

For years, Marvel fans eagerly searched for any sign that Mephisto, a devil-like character, would appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, often finding potential clues in even the smallest details. Their patience was finally rewarded in the Ironheart series, where the villain made his debut and tempted Riri Williams with a tempting offer. While he hasn’t been seen since, Marvel Studios might be planning a larger role for him in the future.
If Mephisto were to appear in New York City, it would establish him as a recurring villain, not just a one-time threat. He’d also be a compelling opponent for The Defenders, as each member is grappling with personal loss and longing for something they’ve lost. For example, imagine the internal struggle Matt Murdock would face if he had the power to resurrect Foggy Nelson – the dramatic possibilities are endless.
