Megahit Zombies Franchise Returns With New Game (And Major Changes)

Over the years, the zombie genre has given us fantastic games like Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil, State of Decay, Dying Light, and The Last of Us. Even though there are already many zombie games available, the genre remains popular. Now, a hugely successful Zombies series is returning with a new installment – and it’s bringing significant changes and a thrilling new concept.

If you enjoy zombie-themed games, you’ve probably played one of the popular Zombicide titles from Guillotine Games. Originally set in the present day, the series has grown to include different eras and settings like medieval times, space, the Wild West, and the DC Universe. Now, a new installment, Zombicide: Dead Men Tales, is arriving, keeping the exciting core gameplay while introducing a pirate theme and some significant changes to how the game is played.

It’s Pirates vs Zombies, Necromancers, and Abominations, But Don’t Forget The Grom

Zombicide is a well-known game series, and this latest installment marks a new beginning – it’s the first one published entirely by Asmodee, after the rights shifted from CMON. CMON has been selling off many of its game properties recently. This new Zombicide edition will launch on the Gamefound crowdfunding platform on April 22nd, and it promises to significantly update the game’s classic gameplay with some exciting changes.

The game board now includes sea zones, which create a new challenge for players. Pirate characters can’t move through these water areas, but Zombies can. What makes it even harder is that Zombies travel under the water in these zones, making them completely untargetable.

The way Zombies appear has been simplified. Instead of needing to open doors to make them spawn, they now simply emerge from designated Spawn Zones and Coffins scattered around the game board. This is all thanks to the Governor, who acts as a Necromancer controlling the Zombie horde.

It might seem a bit harsh, but we’ve added Rope Zones to help with that. These let any player move their Survivor up to three Zones in any direction with a single action. You can quickly swing over obstacles like water or groups of Zombies to reach safety, and there are even ways to extend your swing range even further.

You can find powerful new weapons by exploring Treasure Zones and collecting Treasure Tokens, or by visiting specific locations marked on the map. While there are many different pistols to choose from, you can also unlock unique weapons like the sword pistol, the Grinder, and Xhianna’s Retribution. This is the first time guns have been included in the fantasy version of Zombicide, but keep in mind these are older firearms, so you’ll need to reload after each shot.

The game introduces Grom, a popular drink among pirates, with a unique gameplay element. You can visit taverns and try to find Grom, earning a Grom token if successful. These tokens unlock special Grom dice that can boost your attacks and actions. However, be careful! Rolling a 1 on a Grom die will knock you down, leaving you vulnerable until you use an action to get back on your feet – a consequence of enjoying too much Grom at the tavern.

Zombicide: Dead Men Tales is set to hit Gamefound on April 22, 2026.
