Denise Jonas is reflecting on a health scare that changed her life.
Denise Jonas, 59, the mother of Kevin, Joe, Nick, and Franklin Jonas, recently shared details about her experience with a stroke affecting the basal ganglia.
Denise explained in a clip from the Got It From My Momma podcast, as reported by Us Weekly on April 11th, that a problem in the basal ganglia area of her brain impacted her thinking, speech, and ability to reason. She sometimes found it hard to speak.
The medical emergency has left her with lingering issues, particularly with her memory.
Denise explained that when she’s tired or hungry, she sometimes struggles to find the right words. She added that she occasionally forgets details, even simple things like whether it’s ‘this’ or ‘that’.
Denise explained that she didn’t recognize the early signs of a stroke when she started feeling sick at home.
She explained that she’d been experiencing high blood pressure. Over the previous six months, she’d visited three doctors about it – her dentist and gynecologist both checked her blood pressure. She also described a strange sensation in her arms, saying, ‘It’s terrible, but it’s the only way I can describe it.’
Denise also had the hiccups, and she’s discovered that this is often an overlooked sign of a stroke in women.

Denise Jonas realized something was off when she attempted to get a drink of water but couldn’t move.
Mama Jonas didn’t say exactly when, but she revealed she felt thankful for the positive things that came about after a recent health issue.
She believes the experience, despite being difficult, was ultimately a positive turning point in her life. She described it as a blessing, something she feels was sent to help her slow down and find peace. It’s not how most people would react to such a situation, but it allowed her to pause and reflect.
Now that you’ve heard about Denise’s difficult experience with a stroke, let’s take a look at health challenges faced by other famous people.

Nikki Bella, known from Total Bellas, shared that one of her breast implants moved after being hit in the chest by Piper Niven during a wrestling match in July 2025.
She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, saying they would get the issue resolved eventually. She explained to the doctor that as soon as she finished her current commitment – ‘the minute the boots are hung up’ – she’d return to address the problem and ensure everything looked its best, anticipating future use. She emphasized the need to fix it so it wouldn’t appear neglected.

Lupita Nyong’o, known for her role in 12 Years a Slave, received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, the year she won an Academy Award for her performance in the film.
She didn’t share her diagnosis until 2025, when she revealed on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with the condition for over ten years.
She explained that growing up, people are often told periods are painful and that pain is just something women have to deal with. This leaves many of us feeling like we’re going through a difficult experience on our own.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she was hospitalized for a hernia. This happens when there’s a gap in the abdominal or groin muscles, and in her case, it was caused by wearing very tight pants.
She messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “You haven’t tweeted in ages!” She then jokingly added, “Have you ever thought maybe those super-tight pants I wore six months ago gave me a hernia, and I’ve just been too afraid to mention it?”

The former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 shared in April 2025 that he was recovering from surgery for a nearly burst appendix.
Brian shared in an Instagram video that he recently experienced stomach pain which led him to the emergency room. He explained he had a perforated appendix – it hadn’t fully burst, but was very close to doing so.
He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

During a soccer game against the Seattle Reign on September 14th at Lumen Field in Seattle, a midfielder for Racing Louisville collapsed after only a few minutes of play.
According to Reuters, the U.S. Women’s National Team player sat down on the field with a teammate supporting her, and then quickly collapsed. Trainers were called to assess her condition.
After receiving immediate medical attention on the field, Savannah was taken to a nearby hospital for more tests, according to a statement from the National Women’s Soccer League. They reported that she is currently in stable condition and is alert.

As someone who’s always been interested in well-being, I found Adam Devine recently sharing something really personal and relatable. He revealed that an accident he had as a kid – he was hit by a cement truck when he was just 11 – still causes him issues today. It’s a reminder that childhood injuries can sometimes have lasting effects, and it takes real strength to talk about those things.
“It’s been incredibly difficult,” Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. “I’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors recently told me I was facing a life-threatening situation—within the last year, actually.”
He acknowledged that his pain is intermittent, explaining that his body has some minor imperfections and isn’t quite functioning as it should.

A former contestant on The Bachelor had to be hospitalized after experiencing severe back pain. He described having to crawl to get help, and said the pain worsened during a recent road trip with a friend.
I was really shocked listening to him on his Trading Secrets podcast back in March 2025. He described how his knees still felt tingly, which is wild considering what he told us. He said just a few weeks before, he was squatting almost 300 pounds! Now, he can barely stand on one foot, let alone do a squat – he actually said it felt like he’d had a stroke, it sounded so serious.
But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Gina Kirschenheiter, from The Real Housewives of Orange County, revealed that her ex-husband, Matt Kirschenheiter, had a heart attack in March 2025, but he is recovering well.

In March 2025, the actor from 30 Rock experienced a medical issue at a New York Knicks game and had to be taken out of Madison Square Garden in a wheelchair.
The comedian later posted on social media to explain he had food poisoning, but was starting to feel better.

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday outing with her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a trip to go clay pigeon shooting when the incident occurred.
I was injured when someone at a party accidentally fired a gun in the wrong direction, and I was shot in the face, I shared on Instagram. Thankfully, @thebrendanrooney quickly helped me, checked my injuries, and got me to the hospital. I was hit five times, and one bullet narrowly missed my right eye – it was less than an inch away.
The former Kim Possible star shared that a small piece of something is stuck behind their eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, and they’ll be keeping a close watch on the situation, as their vision is currently normal.
The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving and shared a heartfelt message about cherishing loved ones. “I’m so thankful for my daughters, husband, family, and friends,” she said. She described how quickly life can change, urging everyone to hug their loved ones often, because you never know what tomorrow may bring.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often negative side, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier,” Schumer was surprised to see doctors commenting on her appearance online, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome. They pointed out changes in her face that concerned them. This led Schumer to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section, which caused the condition. She wouldn’t have known about it otherwise. She recently shared that she’s relieved to learn her type of Cushing syndrome will resolve on its own and that she is healthy, calling it the “greatest news imaginable.”

During a game in December 2024, an AHL player was accidentally cut in the face by another player’s skate and needed 25 stitches to close the wound. After his son made a full recovery, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald shared with ESPN how relieved they were, saying, “We feel very lucky, and I wouldn’t want any parent to go through that.”

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what happened to Hailey! I was seriously freaking out when I heard. She was just having breakfast with Justin in March 2022, and she started having this terrifying moment – like, stroke-like symptoms came on suddenly. She said Justin kept asking if she was okay, but she couldn’t even respond the first time! Then, when she tried to answer him, she couldn’t get the words out, and the right side of her face just started drooping. Can you imagine?! Thankfully, it stopped and she could speak again, but she immediately went to the hospital, which she absolutely should have. They did scans and found out she’d had a small blood clot travel to her brain – it was a TIA, which is so scary to even say. But it gets even more intense! She went to UCLA and discovered she has a hole in her heart, a PFO. Apparently, the blood clot escaped through that hole and went to her brain, causing the TIA. Thankfully, she had a procedure to close the PFO, and she says she’s feeling amazing now! I’m just so relieved she’s okay, she’s such an inspiration!

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.
In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it had become increasingly difficult to eat.
Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, adding that while the situation had been frightening, he was going to be okay and she was grateful he was fine.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had previously kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, Foxx explained that he was suffering from a severe headache when he suddenly lost consciousness. He doesn’t remember the next twenty days.
Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, became concerned and took him to the hospital. Doctors discovered he had a brain bleed that resulted in a stroke.
After surgery, twenty days passed before Foxx woke up on May 4th, finding himself in a wheelchair and unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying, “I needed every prayer.”

The reality TV star shared that she briefly stopped breathing while running in the first challenge of the NBC competition show, describing the experience as feeling like death.
She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling as though she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, she remembered only darkness, followed by light, leading her to realize she had died that day.
She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the show, she experienced a severe headache at the gym, which quickly escalated. She described collapsing and being violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.
A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she struggled with aphasia, finding it difficult to speak coherently.
Though she was discharged after a month, a follow-up scan in 2013 showed the aneurysm had grown, requiring a second surgery. This procedure was unsuccessful, leading to a massive bleed and a dire prognosis. Doctors had to perform an even more invasive surgery, accessing her brain directly through her skull.
Fortunately, Emilia Clarke is now fully recovered and says she’s back to 100 percent.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared how much she appreciates her family’s support after a health scare. In January 2024, Cori suffered a stroke and immediately reached out to her loved ones, sending them a picture and a text message. She told TopMob News that everyone quickly came to her aid.
Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than expected due to other health issues. In addition to recovering from the stroke, she was also dealing with complications from lupus and kidney problems.
Fortunately, Cori is now recovering well. She says she’s feeling great and has been working to regain some motor skills, but is otherwise doing fine.

Shailene Woodley struggled with significant health issues throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she described a time when she was losing her hearing, unable to walk for more than a few minutes without needing to rest for hours, and experiencing stomach pain with everything she ate. She faced confusion due to conflicting diagnoses from different doctors.
Shailene, who has kept the specifics of her condition private, sought answers by combining traditional medical care with holistic and herbal approaches. This search for well-being lasted for ten years.
The physical discomfort led to emotional challenges, including fear of food and struggles with body image and identity. She described a period of intense mental difficulty.
Fortunately, Shailene has since recovered and is now in good health. She expressed gratitude for her improved well-being.
