The PlayStation 5 release of Starfield has been rocky, according to player reports. Many users on the game’s subreddit are requesting refunds, citing issues like crashes, freezes, and problems with saved games that make the game unplayable. Some players reported frequent crashes even on a standard PS5, while others experienced problems whenever they tried to do anything beyond simply being in their spaceship.
Gamers have pointed out that even with the PS5 Pro’s upgraded power, Starfield still isn’t running smoothly. This suggests the game’s problems – like crashes and glitches – aren’t due to the console itself, but likely stem from the game not being well-optimized for PlayStation.
A player reported giving up on the game after trying everything to fix persistent freezing issues. They’ve contacted tech support with a message and a support ticket, but nothing has worked. They feel frustrated because they enjoyed the parts of the game they were able to play and believe they wasted their money.
In our visual analysis of Starfield on the PS5 Pro, we found the port to be solid, especially regarding graphics quality. We noticed textures were slightly lower resolution, but it was only apparent upon close inspection. While the PS5 Pro’s upscaling technology worked well, the console version didn’t quite match the visual clarity of a powerful PC.
It’s interesting to note that not everyone is experiencing crashes with the game. Some players have reported very smooth experiences – one person played Starfield on PS5 for 10 hours without a single crash, and another played for 60 hours without any issues.
Everyone was super hyped for Starfield to come to PS5! Seriously, it was dominating the pre-order charts on the PlayStation Store – in a lot of places, it was number one. Even when it wasn’t quite at the top, it was always right up there in the top three. It was a little confusing though, because they listed the regular version and the Premium version as separate pre-orders, which might have split things up a bit.
Starfield first launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S. A version for PlayStation 5—you can read our review here—arrived alongside the Terran Armada expansion. This expansion added a new faction with detailed backstory and plenty of new story missions. We rated the Terran Armada expansion 7 out of 10, praising its interesting ideas and amount of content, but noting that some of the missions felt a bit repetitive.
