The Hulk is one of Marvel’s most popular characters, but he didn’t become a sensation immediately. His first comic series in 1962 only lasted six issues. However, he eventually found huge success, and by 1978, he had his own TV show, making him well-known to everyone. Even when other classic Marvel heroes were struggling, the Hulk remained consistently popular. A long and acclaimed run by writer Peter David kept the comic book series thriving throughout the 80s and 90s, and in the 21st century, some fantastic stories have cemented his place as one of Marvel’s best characters.

As a longtime Hulk reader, I’ve seen some incredible stories, but Greg Pak’s “Planet Hulk” still stands out as a true masterpiece. However, his newfound life was tragically cut short when the ship that brought him to Sakaar exploded, devastating the planet and killing most of its inhabitants. Fueled by vengeance against the Illuminati, Hulk then set off for Earth.

“Planet Hulk” is a great story for both longtime Hulk fans and newcomers. It marked a significant breakthrough for writer Greg Pak, who brilliantly crafted the world of Sakaar. While using familiar story elements like tyrannical rule, gladiatorial combat, and rebellion, Pak uniquely applied them to the Hulk’s narrative. He also introduced memorable supporting characters and kept readers guessing with unexpected twists. Combined with the dynamic and exciting artwork by artist Aaron Pagaluyan, “Planet Hulk” delivered a Hulk story that felt fresh and unlike anything seen before.

The comic was an instant success, quickly becoming incredibly popular and valuable. It generated a lot of buzz in the comic book world, earning widespread praise and captivating readers. This story directly led into the World War Hulk event, which provided a satisfying conclusion and then launched the acclaimed Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness run on Hulk (Vol. 3), introducing the Red Hulk. Because of this, the story was ultimately incorporated into Thor: Ragnarok, though it was changed quite a bit. While Ragnarok is a popular movie, many fans felt it didn’t do the “Planet Hulk” story justice.

“Planet Hulk” is widely considered a classic and a highlight of Marvel’s creative peak in the mid-2000s.
