It’s been ten years since Kevin Hart and Ice Cube starred together in the Ride Along movies, but a third film is now starting to come together. Both actors are reportedly on board to reprise their roles in another action comedy. The first Ride Along was a big hit in 2014, earning $154 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. The sequel, released in 2016 with a $40 million budget, also performed well, bringing in $124 million globally, proving audiences still enjoy seeing Hart and Cube together.
Universal is developing Ride Along 3, bringing Ice Cube and Kevin Hart back together after a decade. Tim Story, who directed the first two Ride Along movies and has a strong working relationship with both actors, is also returning as director. The original film followed Ben Barber (Hart), a security guard trying to impress his girlfriend’s brother, James (Ice Cube), a police officer. James brings Ben along on a high-stakes ride-along through Atlanta, leading to a lot of laughs and action.
The next installment builds on the original idea, featuring Ben as a new police officer who’s about to become James’ brother-in-law. They team up to bust a drug operation in Miami. While details about Ride Along 3‘s story are still under wraps, the film will likely continue to explore the funny dynamic between the two characters. A new writer, Daniel Gold, is taking over the screenplay. Gold has worked on the comedy series Workin’ Moms, and his script Tough Guys has been acquired by Amazon MGM Studios, with Will Ferrell and Ryan Gosling attached to star.
A new Ride Along movie is being discussed, potentially because of recent career challenges for Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. Hart hasn’t had a major box office success since Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019, with films like Borderlands, Me Time, and Lift not performing well. Ice Cube has had a few small successes, voicing a character in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and appearing in the Anaconda remake, but he wasn’t a central figure in either. Many remember his 2025 film, War of the Worlds, as being particularly poorly received.
Kevin Hart is working on the next Jumanji movie, having recently finished filming with Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan. Meanwhile, Ice Cube is moving forward with a sequel to Last Friday, a project he’s been passionate about for years and which is now gaining traction.
A third Ride Along movie could be a big success for Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. While critics weren’t fans of the first two films—the first earned an 18% rating and the second a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes—audiences clearly enjoyed them, as both were box office hits. It’s possible the writing will be improved for the third installment. It’s currently unclear if other actors, like Tika Sumpter, will return, but more information about Ride Along 3 will be released as the project moves forward.
