A follow-up to “The Social Network” is currently being developed, but it’s important to note that there will be a significant difference from the original, which earned numerous accolades. As reported by Deadline, Aaron Sorkin has agreed to write and direct this new project, titled “The Social Network Part II“. Sorkin is well-known for writing the first “Social Network” and winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. In contrast to the original, Sorkin’s script for this sequel will be inspired by The Wall Street Journal’s investigative series on Facebook, “The Facebook Files“, which delved into the potentially harmful impact of Facebook and social media on society as a whole.
As Aaron Sorkin assumes both writing and directing duties for “The Social Network Part II,” it’s clear that David Fincher won’t be at the helm this time around. Fincher was instrumental in directing the original “Social Network” and garnered much acclaim for his work. At present, there’s no indication that Fincher will be involved with the sequel in any capacity. According to Deadline, a start date for filming “The Social Network Part II” hasn’t been set yet, but the next step is deciding on the cast. It remains uncertain if Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg.
Released in 2010, the film “The Social Network” is often hailed as one of the greatest movies of the 21st century. It garnered numerous awards and nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the Oscars. Not only was it critically acclaimed, but it also proved to be a commercial success, earning $224.9 million globally on a production budget of just $40 million.
2023 saw Fincher mentioning discussions with Sorkin regarding a potential sequel for the movie “The Social Network”. At that point, he referred to such a movie as a complicated matter given Facebook’s and Zuckerberg’s experiences over the past few years, describing it as an “opened can of issues”. While Sorkin works on “The Social Network Part II”, Fincher has moved onto another sequel project. His upcoming work is a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, with Brad Pitt set to reprise his role as Cliff Booth.
Aaron Sorkin is mostly recognized for his exceptional screenwriting abilities, yet he has also directed a few films under his belt. Among them are “Molly’s Game,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Being the Ricardos.” These movies were generally well-received, with “The Trial of the Chicago 7” even receiving a Best Picture nomination. However, none of these films garnered quite the same level of acclaim and recognition as David Fincher’s best works have. Despite Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant screenplay for “The Social Network,” it was Fincher’s exceptional direction that truly made the film stand out. His style seamlessly matched the material, infusing the movie with a captivating energy as it delved into the transforming digital era. It goes without saying that Fincher is a tough act to follow, and his absence was certainly noticeable.
Despite the fact that The Social Network Part II hasn’t been made yet, it has an intriguing basis for development. Unlike the first movie which focused on Facebook’s creation, this sequel could delve into the aftermath and examine how the world has changed over the last 15 years. Aaron Sorkin demonstrated his ability to craft a captivating and intellectually stimulating story in this universe, and if he felt confident about this narrative being worthwhile, it’s likely that he wouldn’t be considering a sequel. Although David Fincher’s direction will be missed, as long as Sorkin demonstrates competence behind the camera, The Social Network Part II could turn out to be an impressive continuation.
